God, I Just Bombed an Accounting Midterm and Go To a Non-Target...Help!

God dammit, I just found out I totally bombed my intermediate accounting test (did way worse than the average), and I've basically realized now that accounting is not a good major for me. The problem is, because I don't go to a target, I pretty much have to major in accounting to get any respectable job, but I just hate it and am not that good at it, so I dunno what to do. I'm also pissed because my ECs are kind of weak, and grades are the main thing I have (or had). I don't know what to do at this point because IB is looking like a longshot, I'm probably not a good fit for an accounting major, and I definitely don't want to be homeless or in financial sales, so ugh. I'm so fucking screwed!

if you hate it and aren't good at it, it seems to me you won't get a good job regardless so you better find something you like and can do well.

Wait a minute. Your profile says you are a 3rd year consulting analyst, ME major from MIT. Accounting should be a walk in the park for you, you ll be fine... Why are you going back for another bachelors degree at a non-target with those credentials?

Dude, this is a bugmenot account, aka the username and password are posted on a website so people can login without having to create a login themselves. I am a junior at a state school who is considering a finance or accounting major and getting into investment banking as a career. I just bombed a test I studied hard for and I don't know what to do. I really like finance and do well at math/problem solving (I got an A+ in stats and missed an A+ in calc by 0.2%), but really suck at accounting somehow. However, I've heard that finance is a worthless degree unless it's from Wharton or something, so now in scared because my GPA is gonna be like a 3.7 cumulative and I'll have a shitty degree from a shitty college, a shitty grade in intermediate accounting and no job prospects whatsoever. I don't know what the fuck I should do, because I know no one in IB and my school is useless for IB contacts.

Listen, a 3.7 is pretty solid at any school, assuming you go to a somewhat reputable state/private school. My honest advice for you would be not to worry so much about what you are majoring in. Pick something you enjoy and rock the shit out of it with a 4.0 (an econ major with a 3.9 from a non target is better than an 3.3 mech engineer). I have come across indivuals from many different backgrounds (history, engin, math, econ, poli sci) and the one thing they have in common, on average, is a solid GPA.

Additionally, an accounting or finance major puts a "technical question target" on your back when heading into interviews. In conclusion, select a business related major you can ace and pick up what skills you are lacking through a self study course like Wall Street Prep or an internship.

Also, chill the hell out, grab a beer, get laid or anything else that will alleviate your bitchy and negative attitude.

In the end, considering your situation, you need to concentrate more on your networking efforts. Through my process, my best contacts were those I met through linkedin whom I had no connection or common interest with whatsoever (I am a non target as well and interviewed at some of the best firms on the street through networking). Message 1000 people and you may find 20 or more who will genuinely assist you, given you arent a whiny, negative and desparate asshole. IB isnt the end of the world either, try not to have an anxiety attack.

Intermediate is a tough class no doubt; one of the hardest classes I have taken in school so far hands down.

I remember the night before the final, my friend and I stayed up all night cramming ten fucking chapters. We went from one location to another and met with a lot of different people that night (picture Harold and Kumar). All in our quest to get the material down and pass the fuggin exam. That class was no joke.

I aced the class (1 of 5 people in a class of 40), but that's besides the point. I thought I wouldn't have to go through accounting hell again then I took Accounting for M&A's this year and I absolutely bombed the first exam (my score = half the class average).

So essentially what I'm getting at is that accounting is probably the toughest major in the business school. The reason is that it's so dry that the human mind cannot handle that shit in large doses. So my friend all I can tell you is to approach it with enthusiasm and aggressiveness, because it will be getting worse before it gets better.

First time i read thread title i thought it said "God, I just boned an accounting intern", and was expecting a story about being a sex offender in one way or another.

so it could be worse, at least you're not a rapist.

Grades are just one part of the package, if you have low grades you just gotta make it up somewhere else. (3.7 isn't really low either). And If you like finance I would do finance, I don't think the difference between a finance or accounting major would be gamebreaking.

accounting is hard. adding and subtracting numbers can get tough!

i don't get why people freak out about accounting, especially if they rocked stats and calc...you should be a sharp guy and able to handle acct. i just don't get how accounting could be tougher than those classes, but to each his own i guess.

Calm down dude. You go to college so consider yourself lucky. Next time, study harder, or maybe look into a different major. Just relax, its not the end of the world.

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

OP: You're not the only one. I actually just bombed my accounting midterm today too. Got a ~20% when the median was like 80%. Sigh. Is accounting one of those subjects where you either get it or you don't? I felt that even Chem was easier than this..
