Goldman Sachs divisions

Hey everyone,

I am beginning to apply for summer internships, and regarding Goldman Sachs, I am wondering which division(s) I should attempt applying for.

Background on myself: I am an Economics major at a non-target (DePaul University), with a 3.93 GPA and semi-impressive leadership experience on-campus (director of finance for the school's second largest student org). I also worked as a research assistant this quarter (doing stock market related research), and for the past year I have worked as an undergraduate writing fellow (basically a glorified writing tutor) in the school's writing center.

Basically, I understand that going to a non-target eliminates any real possibility of being hired within the IB division, but how about global compliance or finance? Human capital management, perhaps?

Any guidance is very much appreciated. I would just like to get a realistic idea of where I'm sitting.

Thanks!

I would say do what interests you the most. If you want to do IBD, then aim for it. With a 3.93 and leadership experience you have a shot at getting an internship in the various departments of a bank. But since you attend a non-target, you will have to network to get there.

You might have a better shot of getting into a middle office or back office role at GS (I can't comment too much on this), but at the end of the day I think you will be miserable if you hate what you do or would rather work in another division. I think other people on this forum will tell you the same thing. With your credentials, you will definitely have opportunities to land a banking gig at another bulge bracket with networking.

DePaul's not a bad school. While not a target, with that GPA you can still get some interviews. If a Goldman or any other BB SA opportunity doesn't pan out, make sure you concurrently apply to elite boutiques and MMs, maybe some in your area (Blair?). But through networking people will give you a chance if you're well-composed and your GPA stays that high.

Pretty sure that when I was interviewing with GS in Chicago there was a girl from Depaul there.

Don't think that just because you go to a non-target you have no chance.

Also, isn't Depaul really close to Chicago? That should make it easy for you to set up meetings to network with bankers...

Thanks for the advice, everyone. It's been really helpful.

It's good to know that I have more options than I thought, and I'll definitely try to do more networking.

Another question: If I am applying for a non-target school and the division I am applying to is not near me, where would the interview take place? I live in Chicago, but the Global Compliance division (which I do find to be very interesting) does not have offices here. Would I still interview with someone in the Chicago office, or would I be expected to travel to them?

Thanks!
