Goldman VP to MD cycle

With the GS bonus craziness this year subsiding for a bit, thought I'd ask the group here about career bankers at GS. How does the VP promotion cycle work - I understand that GS really just has a VP level beyond which there're MDs, though internally people are definitely aware of who's the senior VP.

For folks that have worked / working at at GS, how does the VP program work, how long is the VP program (I read somewhere on the forum that it's a 5 year program but can't seem to locate the post anymore), promotion path to MD, staffings (esp if you're a junior VP, would you get double staffed with a more senior VP), lifestyle in general and comp?

I know that sentence ran quite long with the run-on questions, but appreciate the group's thoughts here!

MD promotion cycle is alternating years with Partner promotion cycle. Thus, four or five years is possible simply depending on your VP1 year (or longer in some cases, since there is no “director”  or “executive director level,” and there are probably some exceptions that are shorter, but less likely in IB classic groups). The other questions you ask would be entirely group and individual dependent (as they would be at any other bank).
