GPA Question Diversity Candidate

I'm a Sophomore starting to get prepared for junior recruiting. I didn't want to post another one of the classic "is my GPA good enough for IB" questions because WSO is already filled with those, so I decided I'd put my own spin on it.

First, a little bit about me. I'm a student at a target studying Finance with a 3.65 GPA. This summer I will be at a BB (GS/MS/JPM) in a non-IB but still FO role. Additionally, I am gay so I can attend diversity events.

So my question is this, if I want to get into a top group or firm (maybe even a BX) should I devote my semester to sitting in my room working my butt off on my classes to move the GPA up into the 3.7-3.8 range or should I focus entirely on networking?

This entire post makes you look idiotic for two reasons 1. No one with an ounce of intelligence says "Gay GPA Question" 2. You're asking if you should have a better GPA or network? Why not do both - too much to handle for you?

In hindsight I should not have tried to force alliteration with my title. I simply mean to ask as a diversity candidate what would be a better use of my time, not that I will not pursue both, GPA or networking.

Firms hire candidates that are smart and fit well with the company culture. Diversity events can help you get an interview but ultimately whether or not you get the job depends on your technical skills and fit.

Diversity events are meant for minority groups that not traditionally found in workplace. There are a lot diversity events for African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans. That said, there not many diversity events for Asians and Indians (even though they're minority groups). Similarly, while gays are considered a minority group there are not many diversity events for them.
