Grad Student Seeking guidance for entering into IB
I’ve never posted in here, but I have been doing a bunch of reading through the forums and I am currently looking for some advice specific to my situation…
A bit of background on myself: Got my undergrad from Florida State with degrees in Finance & Real Estate. During summers in undergrad I had internships in Wealth Management because that was what I thought I wanted to do at the time… after working in 2 large, very reputable WM firms I realized this was not where I wanted to go but I feel like I might have realized this once it was too late to break into IB and secure an internship there. Ended with a 3.47 in Undergrad as a whole but closer to a 3.7-3.9 in my Finance & Real Estate classes because I crushed those and really enjoyed what I was learning in them so naturally I put forth way more effort there. I’d say this paid off….
Currently obtaining my Masters in Finance at Georgetown and have a 4.0 midway through my second semester. I consider myself very comfortable in finance topics and more than competent in problem solving, getting my work done, and handling a full workload. I feel this way because I am currently juggling a 40-50 hour work week while going home after work to study for my masters every night and I am performing well in both areas while still somewhat managing to have a life and doing things I enjoy when time permits.
Now onto my issue (I guess we can call it that?) I have -what I would consider- a strong resume at 23 years old I have 2 solid financial intermediary internships and a current full time position in the Finance function at one of the largest auto manufacturers in the world at their US headquarters… as well as extensive extracurricular experience in undergrad (during basically every semester I was heavily involved in multiple on campus organizations in various leadership roles) since my sophomore year. But I am struggling to get an interview in any sort of IB analyst or summer position.
I have applied to many programs over the last year and a half and I feel like I may be getting overlooked for these roles because I don’t have the prior IB experience on my resume or maybe because I am old compared to the applicants that may be applying to these roles, or being from a non-target school? This being said, I know I have what it takes to succeed in any sort of work environment, I have a great understanding of finance and accounting –and even real estate– and at this point I believe that if given the shot I would take it and run with it at a high level. I am all about delivering results. I will have my Masters in Finance degree by May 2020 and I am seriously looking to have landed some kind of role by then whether it be a summer analyst position or maybe a spring internship starting January 2020?
I am looking for some guidance as to how to approach the next 8 months so I can best position myself to get into this industry starting next year. I would honestly take any steps necessary to accomplish this, as at this moment, I know this is where I want to go. Happy to clarify anything and seriously any feedback is greatly appreciated. I live in DC at the moment and I know there are some IB firms in my area. I am not limited to staying here by any means but would definitely like to see what I can do to get started in this area, if at all possible.
