Group Placement Questions
Currently doing group placement for a mm/verge of bb bank.
I had a few questions and would be grateful if anyone could provide insight
- Should you do calls with every group, even if you aren't interested in them? For example, I have 3 top groups, but don't know if I'll get them. How does placement work after that?
- What type of questions should you be asking on the call? So far, all of the calls have been pretty much a vibe-check with some market discussions thrown in, but I want to make the best possible impression I can.
- How many calls should you aim for in your top group(s)? What about for other groups? Is there a chance where I'd be placed in a group I haven't even done calls with?
- I'm very interested in HC, but they don't perform well at the bank I'll be interning at. Is it worth it to still pursue networking with them, or would it close doors to exit opps?
- I'd be really appreciate if someone could share their experiences with group placement at their respective bank. I've been really anxious about all this, and I don't know how to go about it all.
Congrats on WF
thank you
Not from WF/RBC tier myself (top BB with no group placement), but my roommate was, so think have a pretty good idea.
Talk to every group you’re interested in and pick based on people + deal flow. The difference between the “best” and “third-best” group at a bank like WF/RBC is basically irrelevant. League tables won’t make your 2 years a good experience, liking your team while getting live reps will.
At WF/RBC-type banks, MF on-cycle exits are not happening. If you want MF or top UMM, you need to lateral. Most analysts go MM, and only the very top performers across the entire class land at smaller UMMs (the $4 - $6bn funds).
What actually matters is having real deal experience (live or closed) that you can talk through cleanly. Also, most MM/UMM recruiting doesn’t really happen on-cycle anyway, last class was mostly Jan/Feb, would expect MM's to start ~3–6 months into the job.
We get it, you were at Goldman, not sure how relevant it is here.
How do you know that someone worked at Goldman? They will tell you.
Could you also provide your opinion on top BB group placement? I am incoming at a BB and have group placement coming up. Would love to hear how you approached placement and any tips/insights. Thanks
At the risk of validating the commentator above; I was at Goldman and didn't have group placement. I just ranked groups and the offer came with a classic group.
hi, when i was speaking about exits i wasnt rly referring to pe, im more interested in private credit actually. also idrc about prestige, just having exit options and being paid well. but thanks for your input nonetheless
if you want to PC, just go to LevFin or FSG; by far best chances.
