Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. PJT/EVR/CVP (Elite Boutiques):

    • Pay: Typically higher than GS Classic, with better bonuses.
    • Hours: Slightly better work-life balance compared to GS, though still intense.
    • Experience: More responsibility and exposure to deals early on, given the leaner deal teams.
    • Exit Opportunities: Exceptional buyside placements (e.g., BX, Carlyle, Apollo, TPG, top HFs). Analysts from these firms are highly sought after for private equity and hedge fund roles.
    • Culture: Smaller class sizes and closer interaction with senior bankers. This can be a pro or con depending on your preference for a more intimate vs. larger environment.
  2. GS Classic (Bulge Bracket):

    • Prestige: Still carries significant brand recognition globally, especially for those considering long-term careers in finance or transitioning to other industries.
    • Group Selection: Can be a "crapshoot," as group placement significantly impacts your experience, lifestyle, and exit opportunities. Top groups (e.g., TMT, FIG) are highly competitive.
    • Network: Larger alumni base and broader reach, which can be advantageous for long-term career mobility.
    • Program Structure: More streamlined and established, given its size and history.

Key Decision Factors:

  • Career Goals: If you're aiming for private equity or hedge funds, PJT/EVR/CVP might give you a slight edge due to their buyside placement track record. If you're unsure or considering a broader career path, GS Classic's brand and network could be more versatile.
  • Culture Fit: Do you prefer the boutique environment (smaller teams, more responsibility) or the larger, more structured environment of a bulge bracket?
  • Group Placement: If you have a strong preference for a specific group at GS and can secure it, that could tilt the decision in GS's favor.

Ultimately, all these options are top-tier, and your success will depend on how well you perform in your role. If you have a strong preference for a specific culture or career path, let that guide your decision. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with any of these choices.

The boutique obsession on this forum is dramatically overblown. If you have an offer from Goldman in New York to do investment banking out of undergrad, you take it. (Assuming it is a solid/top coverage group eg tmt fig industrials consumer) if other groups I would then potentially prefer the top EBs

I mean the difference in exits is completely marginal here (PE/HF only), however the better culture and more enjoyable experience at an EB is definitely something to consider. I understand the allure of GS prestige as an undergrad but also important to be aware of this is 2-3 years of your 20s and some people burn out/become disillusioned with the industry because of bad analyst years - there was a thread the other day about GS analysts literally passing out in the office.

The reality is it is more or less the same at any reputable, top-exit group. You think PJT and EVR have good WLB? Lmao. The people I know at Cvp are literally miserable from their “account base staffing” model that prospects obsess over on here. It’s almost all the same if we’re talking NY top EB/BB.
