GS IBD India -> Conversion Rate from Different Sector Coverages

Hi there, this is my first post around here. I feel I would need some guidance.

Background in brief: I have completed my undergrad from a tier - 1 college from India. My major was engineering. Additionally, I pursued a MiM from a target in the UK. But given the tough market in London, I had to apply to GS India.

Fast forward, I did get into the firm. My sector and region haven't been decided yet. But, ideally I am looking to get into a sector which gives me the best conversion opportunities (to NA / EMEA FO).

Is there any sector-wise ranking that I can follow? (I understand all sectors have their own importance. However, I am looking for the best opportunities: be it from the work aspect / pay aspect / conversion to FO aspect.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, there isn't a specific sector-wise ranking for conversion opportunities from GS India to NA/EMEA Front Office roles. However, here are some insights that might help guide your decision:

  1. Sector Importance for Conversion: While no explicit rankings exist, sectors that are more globally integrated or have significant cross-border deal activity (e.g., TMT, Healthcare, or Industrials) might offer better opportunities for exposure to international teams and eventual conversion. These sectors often involve collaboration with teams in NA/EMEA, which could increase your visibility and chances of transitioning.

  2. Work Aspect: Front Office roles in India at US/European banks often involve a lot of pitch/valuation work. However, being in a sector with high deal flow and strategic importance can provide you with more substantial deal experience, which is critical for conversion.

  3. Pay Aspect: Compensation differences between sectors are generally minimal within the same firm. However, sectors with higher deal activity might offer better bonuses due to higher revenue generation.

  4. Conversion to FO: As mentioned in WSO threads, moving from GS India to NA/EMEA Front Office roles is challenging but not impossible. Building strong relationships with international teams, excelling in your current role, and networking effectively are key factors. Additionally, gaining experience in sectors that align with the hiring needs of NA/EMEA offices can improve your chances.

If you're looking for a more structured path, consider sectors that align with your long-term goals and where you can demonstrate the most value. Also, keep in mind that lateral moves within the firm or to other firms might also be viable options for transitioning to NA/EMEA Front Office roles.

What kind of technicals were asked? Just wanted to gauge the level. Also, what was the case study related to?

Thanks for the earlier reply, much appreciated!
