H1B sponsorship and OPT

I'm an international student majoring in Econ so I'll get 2 years of OPT after I graduate, but I know that needing to get sponsored for an H1B makes recruiting way harder so I was wondering if I still need an employer to sponsor me during the 2 year OPT or if I can basically be treated like an American until my OPT expires and I need to shoot for H1B.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, as an international student on an F-1 visa with an Economics major, you will indeed have two years of OPT (Optional Practical Training) after graduation. During your OPT period, you do not require H1B sponsorship to work in the United States. You can work similarly to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident until your OPT expires. However, if you wish to continue working in the U.S. after your OPT ends, you will need to find an employer willing to sponsor you for an H1B visa.

To elaborate on point 1, which refers to the H1B sponsorship and OPT:

  • During OPT: You can work in the U.S. without an H1B visa. Your employer does not need to sponsor you for the duration of your OPT.
  • After OPT Expires: To remain and work in the U.S., you will need to secure H1B sponsorship from an employer. It's advisable to discuss this with potential employers early in your employment to ensure a smooth transition from OPT to H1B status.

Remember, it's crucial to plan ahead and be proactive about your visa status to avoid any interruptions in your employment eligibility.
