Hard time breaking in
Hi Monkeys, been following this forum for a couple years. To just get into it- I have a top 20 business education, several years of financial services experience, & still am getting dinged from everything from IB, to equity research and sales/trading roles. I know the market is really tough right now, but at this point I'd love to just land anything. Currently, I'm an intern at a boutique I.B. but have yet to capitalize on any opportunities. Any advice or ref's would help in these times, wishing everyone a happy midweek.
Went through something like this, there is evidence suggests that when one person gets one offer they’re most likely having multiple offers, and the person getting rejected is likely getting rejected by everywhere else for similar reasons. This is not to say that you can’t leave with one offer sticking and things work out. What I’m saying is these companies want desirable candidates. If you’re struggling to convert any of your interviews you need to reassess your skills, and see where things are going wrong. Often times kids will bash themselves into a wall and continue to apply and apply with the same results. You need to reflect and see what’s going wrong, even if that means take a pause on your recruitment for a bit.
Would you have any advice for someone who's facing this who knows what the problem is, but has very limited ability in being able to change it? I (similar to OP) have been struggling for months trying to find an internship for next summer. I've received a lot of interviews, which tells me that there's nothing wrong with my resume, but I always end up getting cut, usually at the first round, which I think is due to the fact that I have a stutter which oftentimes can flare up a lot during interviews. I've tried seeing multiple therapists (both speech & psychological ones), doing countless mock interviews (which I've received consistently great feedback on, except for my delivery due to the speech difficulties), etc. but these efforts seem to not result in any consistent, noticeable improvement in my ability to close on any hiring processes I get into.
Kind of at a crossroads right now where I'm thinking of just pivoting into a more technical field while I still can, but I've found it pretty painful thinking of having to give up my aspirations in finance to do so. Just wanted to ask if you have any advice for this type of situation and if there's anything I could be doing to change my outcomes for the better, or if finance is just not the right field for me given my circumstances.
My advice for you is prepare and prepare. You need to go into this like it’s second nature to you. If you’re stuttering and getting nervous it’s because you’re not prepared enough.
