Fundamentally all healthcare revolves around drugs and devices. Spend your time learning about the drug development process and how things are brought to market. If I was starting over, I would learn biotech and what makes different candidates interesting either from a modality/technology/etc. Attend conferences, read some equity research and generally immerse yourself in the process. Don't waste time on the financials because 90% of successful companies got lucky as there are, at any given time, 50 biotech companies trying for the same thing. You do not need to have an advanced scientific knowledge to be useful in IB but the best can look at a product or drug or technology and see that it tackles the underlying disease but needs specific help getting to the market. There are a few textbooks that I can recommend. PM me and I'm happy to help.

Why not just drop the names of the textbooks here for the benefit of everyone?

Significantly more interest than I expected, now the inbox is exploding so happy to post my thoughts here.  I'm a little Pharma/Biotech heavy below but the same exist for devices/tools.  Hope this helps!

I've used and had my team use, Biotech Primer (https://biotechprimer.com/).  They have online courses but also a lot of publications.  They have two full length books, one on more drugs in general (aimed at non-scientists) and another aimed at advanced therapies like cell and gene therapy, mRNA, etc.   On amazon they are only about $25 at the moment.

Other books I like...

  • Fundamentals of Drug Development by Jeffrey Barrett
  • Basic Principles of Drug Discovery & Development by Benjamin Blass
  • An Elegant Defense by Matt Richtel
  • The Code Breaker by Walter Isaacson
  • Both of Barry Werth's books - The Antidote & Billion Dollar Molecule

I'd also follow a number of biotech/pharma forums and publications.

  • FiercePharma & FierceBiotech
  • Contract Pharma

Finally, go to trade shows.  Usually entrance fees are low and it's a huge way to network, see what's happening in the market.

One last thing, I'd say.  Don't overdo it!  Nobody expects you to be a PHD and in some ways, the scientists who lead these companies need a business mind.  It helps to have a good understanding but you don't need to talk about how a kinase inhibitor works.  The best bankers/advisors/investors know their limit and leave it to the experts.

Good luck!
