Help deciding between internships for junior year summer
I am a student at a target school and I have currently landed a S&T Internship at one of the top bulge brackets (Goldman, MS, JPM). I am also currently going through the recruiting pipeline for investment banking, with an offer from a top sector focused independent advisory firm.
My gut instinct is telling me to accept the S&T internship, as I'm both excited by markets, the idea of working on a trading floor, and think the BB name would be great for my resume. However, I'm a little concerned about the pigeonholing of S&T for full-time recruiting or even if I would want to stay in S&T full-time. I also think IB would set me up for the greatest flexibility in terms of exit opportunities after 2 years, and I am interested in the modeling and valuation that happens in IB. Would someone be able to weigh in on this situation and tell me what they think?
It sounds like you have made your mind up: take the IB offer. It will be very tough going through IB recruiting without IB experience. If by "a top sector focused independent advisory firm" you mean something like Allen & Company, Leerink Swan, or Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co., take it. Those are well-respected firms.
Since I'm assuming you're a junior, you should take the IB as Sil said. You won't have another summer to intern as a Summer Analyst after this so go with what you want to do long term.
^ In response to above, yes, I am a junior.
Bump, would some more people be able to weigh in? I'm struggling with the choice because of the prestige of the S&T internship, and because I may have a slight interest in S&T. I went into the recruiting process more interested in banking but have enjoyed my interviews both for IB and S&T.
