I will be working at a top EB (one of the firms you mentioned) and I don't understand what exactly is so great about GS that you won't even give your current SA EB a chance. Even if GS TMT/FIG have top exits EBs (specifically Laz,Ever, PJT) really hold their ground against them. And as for culture who knows, you might like couple of the people at GS but unless you work with them you won't ever know. The grass is always greener on the other side.
With that being said, reach out around mid June to your contacts for coffee chat. Meet up with him/her make a good impression and make sure to hint that you might be interested in their group but you enjoy your EB so far. Get that return from your EB (shouldn't be too hard with offer rates of 85-90% for most) and moment you get that shoot a message to your contact asking about FT recruiting process with your return offer in hand. Unfortunately, if they don't have any spots you're out of luck but if they do, they'll fill you in on their FT recruiting process (early August).
sounds like he already got the return and is going to the EB full time starting this summer but wants to see if he can move over to GS one year from now.
I've never heard of people lateraling the way you've (talking to OP) described it (planning to join a class that just graduated when you've already worked in IB for one year), but I'm sure that an opportunity can come up if GS is looking for lateral hires. not really going to get into why you're so set on working at GS, but it's probably very difficult to end up in the specific group that you want at GS- you'd have to keep in touch with people that work in the group you want to join so that they can notify you if there are looking for any lateral hires.
Yep you are right.
I want to be able to interview for the next class position as I am going in as FT for EB. I do have contacts in the GS group....Just trying to see if this is possible
The EB kids who go to good buyside exits tends to be very very TARGET(NOT- michigan , uc berkeley, georgetown, UVA, Vandy// YES - Harvard, Wharton, Yale), But kids at GS seemed to be somewhat semi-target (the schools i mentioned of)....
I know eb provides great exposure but ultimately you cant beat GS. And I am guessing you will be working for PJT! since I didnt list it on my post, thats a great gig
Ah misread yeah honestly never seen it happen, at least the earliest move was 6 months but probably a year.
Not PJT actually but close. Actually coming from a semi-target school, I've seen and know of numerous alumni from top EBs make the move to MF PE (apollo, KKR, TPG) granted I'm sure many more don't and go to MM or do something else but I don't think its as skewed as you believe. At least looking at my specific college and their current exits/etc.
Good luck though, GS is GS so I do somewhat understand the sentiment

Lateral Recruiting - Training? (Originally Posted: 11/02/2013)
Is it conventional for BBs/top boutiques to look at analysts 4-6 months into another gig along with the 4th year undergraduate class and make a hire for the following summer inclusive of training?
Are you asking if 1st year analysts lateral after a year and then restart their year 1 all over again? I'm pretty sure that happens quite a bit.
No, you have to apply for the lateral positions.
