HK SA Language Req. - What Roles Do Not Require Mandarin? 2025 Update (Thread)
Looking to start a thread to compile what HK SA roles (or FT) don't require Mandarin to be both considered/competitive. I often see that S&T falls into this bucket but am curious what else, such a niche product groups or non-IB/S&T verticals (ie. VC? Ops? Private Banking? Credit? etc).
Essentially, what roles in HK do NOT require Mandarin, assuming no longer language skills and a top background (ie. Ivy/Target from US/UK + relevant internships in the west)
Thanks!
bump
Realistically, not many, especially at the intern level. S&T probably best chance, and at a BB (HSBC etc). Private banking serves China/APAC region, so need the language as does wealth. Similar story with M&A, mostly mainland clients.
Most SA's go top mainland students or international X born Chinese targets + the 3 HK unis. Then you have the children of the banks clients through nepo.
Probably more chance applying to Singapore (less focus on Mandarin), but in all honesty, only if you're a top target / very relevant exp. and can somehow get visa sponsorship.
Thanks. I'm from a UK Semi (Warwick) and doing a Msc at an Ivy in a related field (STEM/Finance/Econ), multiple LMM IB & ER/AM internships. Was hoping there was a path to potentially S&T (or something else) if my background was strong enough, as I don't need visa sponsorship in HK but don't speak mandarin.
Singapore sounds like the visa situation is v tricky, but I could be mistaken.
I would say you're better off to focus your SA/FT search in the US or London.
Singapore is probably out of the picture re sponsorship unless you can get someone to really fight for you.
For HK IB, some Mandarin is essentially required at the intern and analyst recruiting level. Even framing yourself as "Western" (e.g. aiming for less Chinese-dominated groups) needs you at a minimum to be able to answer behaviorals and walk through a deal in Mandarin. There are definitely internal transfers at associate+ that don't speak a word, though.
Can't speak to HK S&T but hear it's less of a requirement. Singapore generally doesn't require it but it is preferred, or another SEA language. Classes are small though and it seems like lots of slots go to local NUS/NTU/SMU people.
Thanks for this. For the associate+ group who lateral in and don’t speak mandarin, were they westerners/australians or Chinese/other Asian background who just didn’t speak mandarin?
EU/Aus.
Some financing groups that are more markets-oriented have a preference but no hard requirement for Mandarin speakers. I know of people who are not fluent and have gotten offers at some BB. I hear that JPM HK has a more "international" (non-China Asia) team and culture.
