Houston 2026 Summer Housing Thread

Hey everyone,

I’ll be in Houston next summer for an IB internship and I’m having a hard time finding housing.

I looked into:

  • University dorms (most won’t allow non-students)
  • Apartments (all want 12 month leases)
  • Corporate housing (very expensive)
  • Airbnb (prices are pretty brutal for anything decent)

Any advice on where to look from here?

Would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Finding summer housing in Houston for an internship can be tricky, but here are some practical suggestions based on the most helpful WSO content and common strategies:

  1. Short-Term Rentals:

    • Look into platforms like Furnished Finder or Landing, which cater to short-term stays for professionals, including interns. These often offer more affordable options than Airbnb.
    • Check out local Facebook groups or Craigslist for sublets. Many students or professionals lease out their apartments for the summer.
  2. Networking with Other Interns:

    • Connect with other interns at your firm or in the area. Threads like "Roommates in Houston" on WSO highlight that many interns prefer to share housing in downtown or midtown for convenience and cost-sharing.
    • Post in forums or LinkedIn groups for Houston-based interns to find potential roommates or shared housing opportunities.
  3. Corporate Housing Discounts:

    • Some companies have partnerships with corporate housing providers. Ask your HR or recruiting team if they can recommend or subsidize housing options.
  4. Extended-Stay Hotels:

    • Consider extended-stay hotels like Extended Stay America or Residence Inn by Marriott, which often offer discounts for longer stays and include amenities like kitchens.
  5. University Housing Alternatives:

    • While most university dorms restrict non-students, some universities lease out dorms during the summer for interns. Reach out to local universities like Rice University or the University of Houston to confirm.
  6. Local Real Estate Agents:

    • Contact real estate agents who specialize in short-term leases. They might have access to listings not available online.
  7. Airbnb Negotiation:

    • If Airbnb is your only option, try negotiating directly with hosts for a discount on longer stays. Many hosts are open to this for month-long bookings.
  8. Midtown/Downtown Focus:

    • Midtown and Downtown Houston are popular areas for interns due to proximity to offices and amenities. Focus your search here for convenience.

If you’re still stuck, consider revisiting the WSO forums for updated threads or reaching out to other users who’ve been in similar situations. Good luck with your internship and housing search!
