How do SA Candidates Impress Bankers while Networking?

Current bankers - what do summer analyst candidates do that impresses you throughout networking?

Assuming the person already has a good resume which is why you offered your time - what else impresses you? Not being a complete awkward nerd on the phone/while getting coffee? Having industry knowledge? Not asking generic robotic questions about the industry and your firm?

Is being competent and likable enough to make an impression, or do you look for more?

Thanks, any input from junior or senior bankers is immensely helpful.

Odd piece of advice but once in a while, I would have a networking opportunity that turns into a "mini interview". Usually, this would consist of me just walking them through my resume, giving my opinions on a certain mkt/industry, but sometimes more. Be prepared to leave a good impression with your responses and make them unique in a way that person will remember you and vouch for you.

It is easy to get someone on the phone and then just ask questions like: "what do you like about the job", or any other really recycled questions. Also, just in general, try to learn more about THEM. Once you get a conversation going that isn't related to banking, in my opinion, you hit gold.

Having relevant experience is pretty much as far as you can go. Unless you did something that not many people achieved. It won't impress them that much but definitely something they'll respect about you

two words: firm hand jobs.
