How do we get as sharp as possible?
Currently a bit motivated again to really perform this fall/winter.
Any rituals, supplements, habits, etc. that help you really get locked in, sharp and focused?
I feel like I am way behind my best shape at this point in time.
It's the mindset that is most important. It's a part of my (and everyone's) personality to have this raw, focused, impulsive (in a positive flow state way) side of them. The way I see it, I-banking is a way to funnel that drive or aggression into something mostly prosocial. And not to mention, these skills and experience will carry over to your older years (when you don't have this energy).
Hopefully that helped, supplements: coffee, rituals: learning more corp. finance, habits: stay positive and optimistic.
Cut out the caffeine. One a day.
Cut out the booze to one night a week when you’re not going to be really working the next day
Reorient your life wherever possible to early starts and fixed finishes. Set a time each day when you’re going to be done and stick to it. If at all possible (and I realize it isn’t always is as an analyst), fill the slack in the am not the evening. Your quality work and sense of perspective will improve a ton if the time you pick up the extra work you can’t finish by say midnight is 730-9am and not 12-2am.
Get a 15 min workout every day come what may
Start a day with a list of to dos and classify them. Personal things, things I owe people, things people owe me, things that deserve time and thought, things that require time and thought, things I just bank out, who do I need to speak to live. Execute on it, if it’s not on the list, question why it’s there
Interesting take! Why does picking up the slack left over from the day before in the early morning change ones sense of perspective? Could you elaborate on it?
In combination with choosing a time you’re going to leave (keeping in mind how much work you have), it’s discipline and respect for your time. Because you have a fixed amount of time to get the work done before your day starts, you train yourself to get work done in a set timeframe vs “staying as long as it takes to get things done”.
The best thing I did for myself as a banker (third year analyst) was to follow this process.
Biggest thing for me that enabled me to lose 30+ lbs this year - walking 10k+ steps per day (a walking treadmill under the desk may look weird but your body will thank you). Another way to get it: every time you do a coffee chat do it on a walk, get a stop off earlier on your commute to work, always go for a 15m power walk after lunch / dinner.
Drink a gallon of water a day.
Keep a physical to-do list on you that you rewrite every. single. day. with tasks for the day. Dopamine hits when you cross it out. Completing the to-do list is always my first bullet.
Prioritize rest - theragun, sleep when you can, learn to be social without the alc, learn to leave an event early gracefully.
Little habits build up over time - start with 10k / day and you'd be shocked at how things fall into line. More energized, going to gym now, etc. Did not happen overnight, would not have happened if I didn't enjoy it.
I look at things in terms of what I achieve in a given week as opposed to what I achieve each day. I find that helps because there will be days or multiple days in a given week that you might sleep 3hrs and actually can't do anything but survive so you don't want to set yourself up to feel like you aren't hitting your goals, etc., outside of work. Keeping things simple and building off that works best for me so I try to go to the gym at least twice a week, run 3+ times a week, 2+ home cooked meals a week, etc., small things like that really seem to help me stay "regular" without backsliding. Limiting the drinking and prioritizing sleep when you know you have a tough week ahead, etc., also goes a long way
