Wondering how does group placement day works at a BB. My BB has a full day event dedicated to "group placement". Can anyone shed some light on how the placement day works, and how to be selected to the group that you most wanted. (not necessarily the top groups, just group that you personally feel fitted to)

what happens if each group ranks you last/doesnt like you? Do you get placed in a less desirable group like ECM since they have less of the pick?

Placement day for SA is coming up. Usually, HR sends a list of groups that are taking interns along with blurbs summarizing the group and a few contacts. Basically, what happens is that everyone reaches out to the same people and it is hard to get an "edge". Is there any way to get an edge over other candidates besides having a superior conversation? For example, would reaching out to people whose contact information is not listed be viewed in a positive way or not? I am thinking of searching for other people on linkedin and guessing their email.
The LinkedIn plan sounds pretty creepy... I would a) focus on your school's alumni and b) emphasize your past experience and how it is relevant to the group you want. Shouldn't be too hard between those two
Are you serious? Figuring out peoples email addresses from their linkedin and messaging them has always been my networking bread and butter. I have only ever received positive responses from people from this approach, and feel that I have been extremely successful from it. At the end of the day, wtf is the point of linkedin if it isn't for networking?
I am before the placement period as well. Do you know who makes the decision as to whom to take? I'm thinking, even if I find someone on linkedin (or reach out to a guy who interviewed me and is from a group I want to work in) if the group is like ~60 people big will the person that takes the picks actually talk to my contact so my efforts could have any effect?

From previous experience, the process is generally managed by the analyst staffer or summer analyst staffer (if he/she has been chosen yet). However, they might as for input from other members in the group. I would definitely reach out to the person that interviewed you, any alumni, or any people in the group who you previously met. They are the most likely to relay your interest to the staffer and have a meaningful impact on the process.
Have insightful questions for each group. For example, if you're interested in LevFin, know about the regulatory changes going on, etc. Reading up on some of the group's deals or reading initiation of coverage reports on companies in their sector, (especially some of the less popular ones) might be helpful too.

Is it recommended to network heavily before placement day to ensure you get on a desk you want? I get to pick 3 rotations but haven't networked much. Am I screwed for summer placement?
Probably not. If you don't have an insider, it's pretty hard to network anyway. My best advice would be to reach out to the people you interviewed with if you still have their contact info.

If you want to get in one of the better groups, all your networking needs to be done before the placement day. Talk to everyone, visit the offices, set up meetings, etc. Placement day itself is more of a formality. The top groups already know who they want by that point.

I've never done a placement day before. I'm being told i will be doing 30 minute interviews with people from the groups.
Will these interviews be just like recruiting interviews? Will they be quizzing me on valuation and prior experience, or will it be more about telling me about their group and asking me my interests?

in my (little) experience, the interviews will largely be fit-style, as groups are trying to determine if you are a good cultural fit. good time for the junior guys on the team to see if they'll enjoy working with you at odd hours in the morning, and it's also a good time for you to do the same.
what kind of questions go along with a "fit style" interview though?
should I be researching past deals, brushing up on my valuation, etc, or will it be more like shooting the breeze and getting to know each other?
Just did my MS placement the other day.
Its purely fit. They don't really ask you any questions, its more like they "sell" their group to you.
You're already in, now its your turn to pick them.

Depends on how many spots are in that "top group". Usually the most common way is having someone in that team pull you in and go to bat for you. This can even be a very vocal analyst/associate and does not necessarily need to be a VP/MD.
I'd recommend reaching out to people in the group and trying to build a rapport. If you have a good contact in a certain group and plan on being in the city you're working in at some point, maybe try and stop by to meet the team? Might sound a little over the top but it shows that you're very interested in working with them....
Business Formal Attire for Upcoming Placement Day--Suit Color (Originally Posted: 04/03/2013)
I have a placement day coming up in the next couple of weeks. Right now I only have a light grey suit and a black suit. I know the ideal suits are navy and charcoal, but given the two suits I have, which would be the best to wear? (The picture is the color of the grey suit I own)

Next couple of weeks is enough time to invest in a new suit that you can get altered slightly and cheaply to make it look great. But if you ultimately had to pick between the two, I'd say the black is more appropriate.
I just don't really like navy suits. I'm all about the charcoals.
Thanks everyone. I really can't get another suit for a few reasons I'd rather not say. Between grey and black, what would be most appropriate? I know the industry has its own standards, so anyone with direct experience would be helpful as well.
I've heard black suits are only for funerals, so I want to make sure wearing grey is the right move over the black.
