How does group placement day works at a BB??

Wondering how does group placement day works at a BB. My BB has a full day event dedicated to "group placement". Can anyone shed some light on how the placement day works, and how to be selected to the group that you most wanted. (not necessarily the top groups, just group that you personally feel fitted to)

Are you serious? Figuring out peoples email addresses from their linkedin and messaging them has always been my networking bread and butter. I have only ever received positive responses from people from this approach, and feel that I have been extremely successful from it. At the end of the day, wtf is the point of linkedin if it isn't for networking?

 

I am before the placement period as well. Do you know who makes the decision as to whom to take? I'm thinking, even if I find someone on linkedin (or reach out to a guy who interviewed me and is from a group I want to work in) if the group is like ~60 people big will the person that takes the picks actually talk to my contact so my efforts could have any effect?

 

From previous experience, the process is generally managed by the analyst staffer or summer analyst staffer (if he/she has been chosen yet). However, they might as for input from other members in the group. I would definitely reach out to the person that interviewed you, any alumni, or any people in the group who you previously met. They are the most likely to relay your interest to the staffer and have a meaningful impact on the process.

 

Have insightful questions for each group. For example, if you're interested in LevFin, know about the regulatory changes going on, etc. Reading up on some of the group's deals or reading initiation of coverage reports on companies in their sector, (especially some of the less popular ones) might be helpful too.

in my (little) experience, the interviews will largely be fit-style, as groups are trying to determine if you are a good cultural fit. good time for the junior guys on the team to see if they'll enjoy working with you at odd hours in the morning, and it's also a good time for you to do the same.

 

Just did my MS placement the other day.

Its purely fit. They don't really ask you any questions, its more like they "sell" their group to you.

You're already in, now its your turn to pick them.

I'd recommend reaching out to people in the group and trying to build a rapport. If you have a good contact in a certain group and plan on being in the city you're working in at some point, maybe try and stop by to meet the team? Might sound a little over the top but it shows that you're very interested in working with them....

 

Next couple of weeks is enough time to invest in a new suit that you can get altered slightly and cheaply to make it look great. But if you ultimately had to pick between the two, I'd say the black is more appropriate.
