How does HR and your manager know who you network with during the internship?

As many people know, most firms encourage interns to reach out to other people within the business. Especially in the virtual setting, your manager and HR wont be able to see you networking with people unless you tell them. At least in the office they are able to see you leave your desk and go into a conference room as well as you telling them that you're doing that to network. Also, if you network with people that work close with your manager (people on your desk or same division) obviously it will get back to them. Assuming you network with a bunch of people across different divisions or just people that aren't close with your manager how would your boss or HR know that you did all this networking. Are employees asked to report to HR all of the interns that they have been in contact with?

My assumption is that if you don't network enough you will get dinged when it comes to giving out offers, however my question is could you network with say 15 people over the course of the internship and they still say you didn't network enough because they don't know who you've spokenwith?

How about if it's a random person that is a higher up that really isn't involved in the internship program. Obviously the analysts, associates, and people that are on your desk as well as others that are apart of the internship program will talk with eachother but I'm assuming an MD in a differernt part of the bank is going to go to HR and say so and so talked to me?
