A lot of it comes from lawyers/board members/shareholders that we have worked for or alongside in prior transactions. Say "Investor X" is invested in a company and has a board seat. Said company wants to IPO and Investor X knows us because we ran point on a similar IPO deal for a similar company in the past and he and/or a colleague also sat on the board of that company. They'll reach out and invite us to put together a pitch

Other times it comes from C-Level employees directly. Whether it's a former banker who your MD used to work with that becomes the CFO of a growing company with capital needs or if it's just a CFO from a former client who finds a new gig because his job was eliminated when you sold his previous company. 

Also if your firm has a good research department, that tends to land you a lot of co-manager roles.
