Generally, a relevant internship is better than research, even someplace prestigious in academia. It's definitely better than nothing, but shoot for some real work, even if it is unpaid.

If you have a grad-school leaning transcript (e.g. Econ major with grad level econ courses, real analysis, etc.), and if employers will be seeing your transcript, you should be prepared to sell them on why they are not a backup to a phd program.

Ultimately, academia is an entirely different world than most jobs. Employers want to see you are able to thrive in the office. This is especially true if you don't have any prior work experience.
