How Many Are Jobless?

The other day, I was asked, "How many of your friends don't have jobs?" Remarkably, I couldn't think of ANYONE. This realization got me thinking, despite my unsuccessful job search, that maybe the job market isn't so bad (at least for graduating seniors) and that there still might be hope for the rest of us.

So, out of curiosity, I just wanted to know how many of you are also jobless or have friends who are jobless, too? Do I just have a freakishly lucky group of friends, or am I just not cutting it in interviews?

You have a freakishly lucky group of friends. I have a job, and I know of two other seniors who do as well. But no one else I know of who has tried to find one has been successful. Not just in finance, either. One friend who graduated early with an offer from Boeing got a call a few weeks ago, before she even started work, saying the offer was rescinded.

None of my buddies from high school or college have lost their jobs yet, though a number of them have survived intense layoffs. While I have a job lined up for this summer, more than 50% of the analysts in my class are still looking. Part of this is due to the fact that they are picky (PE or bust?), but it is telling compared to previous years where 100% got PE jobs.

Sounds like your friends have very good luck. Within my group of buddies about 30% of us have offers; the rest are are still searching and feeling very discouraged at the moment.
