Say you're really good friends with a 1st year analyst in IBD at a BB. To what extent could this guy help you get a job/internship at his company?
I'm sure they can't guarantee you a job, but could they guarantee you an interview?

Different with every group, even within the same bank. Many regional offices recruit in separate processes, so first years will have much more influence in getting resumes through to first-round interviews. I know of groups where analysts and associates run the show until the superdays and groups where VP's and seniors have a hand in the whole process. At the end of the day, depends on the group.
in my experience this depends primarily on the bank. I came from a nontarget and know that people from my school that broke into GS, Citi, JPM, and BAML with one or two analyst referrals for summer analyst recruitment. However, we found that MS, CS, and DB were very much NOT receptive to any nontarget consideration (especially MS).
Really depends on the firm. I'm at a target school, and am coming away with the impression after multiple rounds of interviews that referrals in general only get you the interview (and nothing more).
I feel like I'm a pleasant and likable enough guy, and am on decent terms with a handful of analyst at each of the firms that I've interviewed with. However, I've had friends who didn't network at all land superdays while I've been dinged (and vice versa).
Anybody else having this type of experience?
knowing analysts can help you get involved in the process, but in general all candidates must have a superday and meet with many senior people at the firm, so it's hard to survive the whole process without knowing your stuff and having a great story on why you want to do banking.
In the UK - 0 help. I really clicked with a year 1 analyst but the associate had the final word on who stays/goes.
In the US a first year analyst can usually get you an interview if your credentials are good, there are spots to fill, and you impress him.
it depends - sometimes there opinion can mean the difference between getting the job and not getting it. can be even more important than the opinion of an unenvovled MD

In lieu of anything else, yes. They can introduce you to other people. Talk to everyone: even the security guards have friends on the inside....

In all seriousness, if you want to be persistent you should employ every possible channel.
Don't analyst look at resumes when deciding who gets called for an interview? Can't an analyst just put your resume in the pile of people are going get called?
Analysts are valuable and they can at least get you an interview. Also, its easier to relate/take interest in what a first year analyst is doing vs. an MD.
Having just gone through recruiting themselves, first years can actually be pretty helpful when going through the recruiting process. A lot of times they are the ones going through the resumes, and they will probably know who heads up recruiting and such. You'll be surprised how many times some of the more senior folks are actually completely clueless when it comes to analyst recruiting.
1st/2nd year analysts are some of the most important people to reach out to
they are employees just like anyone else so they can refer your resume which is very important
they will be interviewing you/screening you
they are around your age so easy to relate
they might have mutual friends with you.
in fact, its probably more worthwhile to reach out to an analyst at a BB than a "senior MD" or whatever because they will actually know what the deal is with recruitment.
An analyst referred my resume internally, which led to an interview, which led to my FT IB offer.
Same here, I had very few offers. I reached out to an analyst at a boutique downtown and it lead to 2 interviews and an eventual internship for this summer and now extended into the Fall.
I'd say yes... do reach out to analysts.
Absolutely worth doing, for all the reasons listed above. They are the ones who will be doing the initial resume screening, and reaching out to them is a way to put a voice / personality with a faceless resume. It's also a great way to get your resume in the pile, especially if it might not have made it through the screening from the online application process.

Currently in a Master's program in Econ at a top 10 school (non-target for BB). Have a friend on the street who's a first year analyst at a BB and is willing to forward my resume to recruiting/put in a good word. I'm already doing networking with alumni, but so far this seems like my best bet.
