How much do senior bankers have to travel?

I was wondering about this for a while. I heard mixed things from my friends in banking (I am in Europe). Some say from VP and above you basically travel like a consultant (i.e., every week on the road). But more recently I have talked with a former GS analyst and she told me that senior bankers would almost never travel.

Given the nature of the work (advisory/professional services), I almost can't imagine that there is little travel given that there will be for sure tons of meetings with CxOs (be it for pitches or actual steercos) which will also be held in-person from time to time.

MDs travel quite a bit (especially a group head). Like for example, I have only seen one of our MDs once in the past 3 weeks, whereas another MD I see almost everyday. Truly it just depends, but even the one I see a lot travels quite a bit throughout the year. As for VP and Director, it’s definitely less but still occasional. As with all things in banking though, it depends.

Depends on so many different things that it's fairly difficult to generalize. I'm currently a VP and probably travel 15-20 times a year (most trips are 24-48 hours, sometimes less). At the MD level, your frequency of travel depends on how much you're pitching, the stages of your live deals, and - to some extent - what kind of group you're in.

I'm in coverage and would estimate that, on average, my MD is traveling 3-5 times a month.

Thats a really good question from what I have seen senior bankers usually travel quite a bit, especially when they are managing client relationships or closing big deals but it really depends on the size of their coverage area and how global their clients are. Some MDs are on planes every week, while others might only travel for major meetings or roadshows if their clients are nearby. These days, many firms also rely more on virtual meetings which has reduced travel a bit compared to before. Having reliable travel services can actually make a big difference when schedules are packed and flexibility matters. Do you think the level of travel has gone down permanently since more clients are comfortable with remote interactions?
