How tf do I find a sophomore summer internship?

Hey, freshman monkey here (class of 2027 at target). I'm trying to find something for Summer 2025, my sophomore summer, but literally everything I see is only for class of 2026. Is there a way I can tailor my search to roles that I'm actually eligible for? I already have something (VC) for this summer.

Navigating the internship search for your sophomore summer can indeed feel like a jungle, but don't worry, you're not swinging through the trees alone. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps you can take to find those elusive sophomore summer internships:

  1. Leverage Your Current VC Internship: Having a venture capital internship under your belt is impressive, especially as a freshman. Use this experience to network within the VC community and express your interest in exploring other opportunities. Many firms value candidates who have relevant experience and are proactive.

  2. Networking is Key: As highlighted in the WSO Networking Guide, spend a significant portion of your time reaching out to alumni from your school working in the industries you're interested in. LinkedIn and your university's alumni database can be goldmines for finding contacts. Don't hesitate to reach out with a well-crafted message expressing your interest and asking for advice or a brief chat.

  3. Target Boutique Firms: While many prestigious internships might seem to cater to juniors, boutique firms often offer opportunities for sophomores. These smaller firms can provide a hands-on experience that is invaluable early in your career. The WSO forums suggest that targeting regional or industry-specific boutiques can be a fruitful strategy.

  4. Utilize School Resources: Your target school likely has a career center with resources and connections specifically tailored to help students like you. Attend career fairs, workshops, and networking events organized by your school to get in front of recruiters and learn about opportunities that might not be widely advertised.

  5. Apply Broadly but Strategically: While it's important to be selective, also consider applying to a wide range of internships that align with your interests and career goals. Tailor your resume and cover letter for each application to highlight why you're a great fit, even if you're a year younger than the typical candidate.

  6. Seek Advice from Upperclassmen: Connect with students a year or two ahead of you who have successfully secured internships. They can offer valuable advice, insights into the application process, and potentially refer you to opportunities.

Remember, persistence and a proactive approach are key. Keep refining your search strategy, and don't get discouraged by the initial hurdles. Your ambition and the experience you're already gaining will set you apart. Good luck, and keep climbing that finance tree!

Ik a lot of people go search fund route, but I think regional boutique IB looks better on resume. What I did - and it really is foolproof so idk why no one else does it - is find every single IB on LinkedIn in the area I targeted. Usually there would be like 50-100. From there, send a kindly worded email with subject line “XYZ Student Seeking Unpaid Summer Internship” (or paid, but less likely response) to every single one of them. Attach a solid resume. You will get responses and calls. Pass those - easy. And now you have multiple banking internships > one kid with a search fund. Good luck

Apply to places that are class of 2026 anyway (unless it’s like a BB/EB IB). I got a really good placement this way
