How to enter IB post MSF/what to do during MSF
As the title says I’m trying to decide what I should be doing for entry into IB. Graduated early from non-target school in Europe with 3.6 GPA and accepted into top 10 MSF program (Vandy, Columbia, GTown, MIT, USC)
I was late on the jump for SA programs and never got into one because I started my own business to pay for school/expenses.
Currently interning for a P.E search fund I got through because it was my only opportunity in the finance world I could get and need to beef up my CV. What should I look for in terms of work/internship during my MSF program? I would ideally try to leverage my degree into IB following some analyst/intern program but all the banks of course are going for undergrads.
Is it a one or two year programme?
21month program for one acceptance and 1 year for the other school (no decision).
There's a big difference between being accepted to MIT/Vandy and GU/USC at the MSF level. We need more information..
That being said, pretty sure all of those programs are less than 2 years so you'd need to start networking with alumni very soon (over the next couple months) and be ready for interviews through the summer and spring. MSF is weird because for IB IB it is uncommon yet also something that is pulled off every year, as it is essentially another shot at recruiting
When do you get access to OCR job portals?
The latter group so not MIT level but still opportunity for a network. I already have access to job portal & have been tweaking my resume to benefit from my entrepreneurial experience as well as current finance exposure.
Looking at the alumni should I seek out contacts through LinkedIn & use the WSO recommended contact methods? Interning abroad so not able to propose coffee or first contact meetings.
Like the user above said, you need to start networking ASAP with alumni, professors that worked in the field, and any banker that will respond to you in order to establish your network prior to recruiting season starting. If your search fund internship doesn't run through the summer, definitely try and find another internship to beef up your resume more. All major banks are done recruiting for SA in the USA, but you might be able to find some boutiques. If you can't find a boutique, any finance-related internship is better than nothing. Make sure to start prepping for interviews as recruiting season approaches. It also doesn't hurt to look for part-time internships during your MSF program with local boutiques or some other IB related position.
Most people that go into IB are undergrads, but MSF students are also eligible for these positions. It's just not as common because there aren't that many MSF students going for IB relative to undergrads.
How do you suggest going after alumni/professors? As I mentioned to another user I’m not currently in the states so it’s difficult to propose coffee chat and would need to set up calls to discuss my goals.
Definitely applying to all the positions I can find I just need some guidance in finding boutiques within my target location (near city of upcoming MSF)
