How to switch cities within a firm?

Hi all,

How does one go about lateraling between cities but within the same firm? For context, I’m an intern looking to switch cities for full time.

I know networking is important, but should you hide it from your current group? Seems like a moot point since word will likely travel fast within the same company.

Is it better/easier to just try and switch companies entirely?

When is it appropriate to bring up the discussion?

Thanks in advance.

This happened all the time. We used to frown upon this because it effectively pits one office against another in terms of recruiting you. But offices talk with each other. There was one intern from a regional office who started networking with us before summer ended, telling us how he was interested in New York. It immediately got back to his regional office. The intern did not get an offer to go back to that regional office. But if you want to do it in a kosher way, I would bring it up at the end after you receive an offer. If your reasons for needing to move to another office is legitimate, then they might accommodate you. But you effectively wasted a spot in their class which could have gone to another candidate who would have given their left nut to work in your office. So you can expect them to be pissed.
