How to Turn High-Level Networking into an Internship?
I’m part of a finance research group at my university, and I’ve been given the opportunity to lead a small conversation with the Co-Founder & Managing Director of a local boutique investment bank in the city.
My question is straightforward: when you get access to interactions like this, how do you actually convert them into an internship or part-time opportunity—without being awkward or explicitly asking for a job?
I’m looking for advice on how to handle the before, during, and after of these conversations in a way that naturally leads to opportunities, especially within investment banking.
First, you gotta make sure the guy likes you. If someone likes you, they'll go to bat for you.
From there, if he likes you, just ask him. I mean, it's like this: If you have a professor you know likes you, you ask them for help on research or a letter of rec, and they'll be inclined to do so. The same is here. If a student is clearly passionate and I like working with them, I'll 100% see if I can get them a job. But if they're clearly just talking to me just to get a job, I hate that shit. So talk to him like a person. Make friends first
That makes a lot of sense! Thank you for the insight
