H/W student with 3.5 GPA who has barely networked.

Guys I need help pls. I've been dealing with a lot of other shit these past few weeks which tanked my GPA and also caused me to loose focus of networking. I've networked with 2-3 analysts at a few firms but they weren't really my dream firms and none of the conversations were that great, so idk if they will really pull through for me. I did have this really nice conversation with a very senior higher up in charge of a top MM's TMT team so hopefully they pull for me (I had this convo a month ago so how do I maintain this relationship and maybe ask for a more formal referral? Any tips for this?).

I noticed that a bunch of firms (Deutsche, PWP, Lazard, etc) are opening up their applications and many more will after Jan 1 so I'm kinda shitting my pant rn. I've heard that BB's are more lenient with GPA so should I just go all out networking with BB analysts and forget about the EBs? I've also been leveraging family friends who work at these banks to get contacts.

Any tips for what I should do guys? Thanks in advance!

To tackle your situation effectively, here's a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Reignite Networking Efforts:

    • Focus on building genuine relationships with analysts and associates at your target firms. Use LinkedIn, alumni directories, and family friend connections to identify key contacts.
    • For the senior higher-up you spoke with, follow up with a polite email. Reference your previous conversation, express gratitude for their time, and ask for advice on navigating the recruitment process. You can subtly inquire about a referral by saying something like, "I was wondering if you had any advice or guidance on how I could best position myself for opportunities within your team."
  2. Targeted Networking:

    • Prioritize firms where you have existing connections or warm leads. As highlighted in WSO threads, it's better to focus on a few firms and build strong relationships rather than spreading yourself too thin.
    • BBs may indeed be more lenient with GPA, but don't completely disregard EBs or MMs. Instead, focus on firms where you feel you can connect well with the culture and team.
  3. Leverage Family Friends:

    • Use family friends strategically. Ask them to introduce you to analysts or associates at your target firms. Once introduced, focus on building rapport and learning about their experiences.
  4. Application Strategy:

    • With applications opening soon, ensure your resume and cover letters are polished. Highlight any unique attributes or experiences that set you apart (e.g., overcoming challenges, work ethic, etc.).
    • Apply broadly but strategically. Tailor your applications to each firm, emphasizing why you're a good fit for their culture and team.
  5. Maintain Relationships:

    • Keep a detailed record of your networking efforts (e.g., an Excel sheet with contact names, firms, dates, and notes from conversations). Follow up periodically with updates about your progress or to share relevant articles or insights.
  6. Case for GPA:

    • If your GPA comes up, be prepared to address it. Acknowledge the dip, briefly explain the challenges you faced, and pivot to how you've grown or what you've learned from the experience.
  7. Time Management:

    • With applications opening soon, balance networking with application prep. Dedicate specific hours each day to networking, researching firms, and refining your application materials.

Remember, persistence and a targeted approach are key. Good luck!

First of all pal let me teach you ropes. You first of all need a girlfriend. Then you need a side chick for comfort and stress. Then you need to do the same with networking for banking. When they don't take you email the MD and say that was worst mistake of their career. When your interviewing lean back in your chair and tilt your head up almost how Jame Gandofini does in the Sopranos. Say to the interviewer “with all due respect, you have no idea what its like to be number one”

You go to h/w: go ask a career advisor or some club, they will know infinitely more information that is more specific to you than all the posters on here combined.
