I-banking selectivity

For those in the know, how do top-level ibanks select their interview applicants? Specifically, who chooses from the pile of resumes to interview and what is the process of choosing these candidates. Do they first chop the pile down by GPA, or are their other factors at play? Any info is appreciated.

Do you mean for 1st year analyst intake? If so, HR apply the coarse filter (school, degree class, online testing etc)and then conduct the assessment centres (with line) send people through to line for final interviews. Tbh, most people these days fill at least 50% of slots from intern programs.

It probably depends on school and major, but in general atleast a 3.5+ It's a dawg eat dawg world.

3.5 is the GPA that is floated around. It really does depend on your school though, especially if you are at a top 5 school or a non-target

For target schools, alumni of their respective schools go through the resumes and select the candidates. Since piles of resumes do come through, GPA is a quick and easy filter. For non-target schools, I would suspect the GPA cutoff is more strict (i.e. 3.5)

The rules change entirely if referred to the firm by a contact. During my internship last summer I was given the task of screening resumes. I mostly looked at GPA, major, and previous internships. If an applicant was strong in all three areas, he or she got an interview.
