I enjoy finance too much I don't know what to specialize and work in
I am currently 5 years out of school and have worked in 3 different roles. I did a 2 year stint as a BB analyst as a generalist before going to buyside at a true REPE firm. Thought working in banking was cool but not that interesting. Cool to see deals being sourced, pitching to clients, and thinking about how to generate value but it got very very repetitive and I did not feel I was thinking critically, just executing. Decided to do REPE as did not think I was ever going to be able to replicate PE business on my own. Did not want to go into PE as I felt it was banking 2.0. As in, not critically thinking and just executing what a superior tells me to do.
After a year and a half of REPE work, I was able to work on Debt and Equity side of transactions. Love the work and lifestyle. Lean team and a lot of responsibility. Felt as though I was putting my own dollars to work with the intensity and passion I worked with. However, I got a little bored of institutional RE and thought I could do the same thing (acquire good assets in my city and manage them myself or through mgmt company) on my own.
I missed public markets, digging through K's and Q's, reading about the Fed and macro topics so I went bank to working for a bank in their Economic Research group. Have been in the role for less than a year and while I enjoy reading and being an econ/markets nerd, I miss being able to deploy capital. It's fun to write reports and know what is going on around the world in terms of finance, but I feel left out when I comes to public and real estate investing.
I don't see myself in the role for the long run and do not know where to go to next. I was thinking of doing an MBA and taking some time to figure my situation out but it doesnt make sense to go to BSchool without a sure exit plan. My biggest issue is that I understand things quickly and get bored quite fast. I feel as though I plateau quickly.
What job exists where I am not constrained by one asset class, private vs public markets, and where I can chase returns? Should I aim for HF?
Edit: my end goal is to be a professor or a regular teacher at a school I click with. Love sharing knowledge and being in a position to teach/show others. Ideally, I will teach econ, finance, and RE classes that I love and will run RE deals on the side. (Hopefully will have a good company or portfolio at that point)
Perhaps working on investing in companies at earlier stages? VC, growth equity, private debt allow you to be on the investor side while always learning about new products and services coming to market. Private investing at a HF or large asset manager can also be a solid gig.
