I need a new watch (HELP)
Hello WSO,
I love watches the classics, and I am sure that I will get some hate for saying that I am a classic metal band type of guy. Think Subs, Daytona, date just, and some omegas. Dream watch Rolex Daytona 6239, or a Daytona Platinum.
I have been able to save some money from my internship and I want to buy a nice watch similar to the classic Rolex or Omegas. (Please don’t recommend Seiko). I am looking for some recommendations that fit that style under $1,000 that is a good work watch that will look good with a suit but you can also dress it down. Something that isn’t to flashy but is a respectable first watch in the finance industry.
Thanks Monkeys
Sinn 104 or 556
Longines
If you are open to buying used, and maybe stretching your budget to $1,200-$1,500, I would highly recommend you look into the Tudor Black Bay 36. The brand is highly respected (owned by Rolex, and a lot of their watches share the same components and build quality), yet understated and the watches have a classic style. The Black Bay 36 is Tudor's equivalent of the Rolex Explorer I. It has an ETA automatic movement that is truly a workhorse (very reliable, keeps good time, and cheap to service every 4 years or so). The watch looks great on straps too.
If you do not want to exceed your $1,000 budget, I would suggest you look into Sinn watches. You could look into Longines too, but I find some of their watches to look a bit tacky (although that's personal taste). A Seiko alpinist could also be a cool option under $1,000.
Keep us updated on which watch you decide to buy!
I love the black bay Tudor, I am from Canada so with the USD to CAD I am looking at a 4000 watch it is beautiful tho. Maybe I will hold off and buy a special piece in the 4000 range. My pre sub watch.
Can't go wrong with a Movado.
I disagree.
Movado watches have significantly lost their brand value.
I'd honestly rather have an Oris for the prices they charge.

Cartier Tank Hermes Cape Cod
(Both are under $2000)
I would 100% grab a Junghans Max Bill used, vintage Longines, or a Baum and Mercier.
ALWAYS buy used watches btw. Do it right and you'll never lose money and it turns into a super addictive money making hobby! :)
Longiness Hydroconquest Blue. Bought it for 650 eur, totally worth it.
Maurice Lacroix and Frederique Constant are also solid choiced that fall in that range
Christopher Ward is a slightly lesser known brand but they have some solid watches that are very nice to look at at around US$1000.
Casio has some pretty PIMP watches imo... nice and shiny
If you could spend more I would definitely suggest a vintage datejust 1601/1603. If you buy right they’ll hold their value. Expect to pay around 3k for a good example. If you’re quite firm on your price range then as mentioned by others look at smaller/niche brands that offer great bang for the buck.
I will chip in a different perspective.
If you are very sure you know you want something like a classic rolex sub, don't get a seiko / tudor in its place. Because when the time comes, you will buy that sub and your seiko / tudor will go un-used (i.e. collect dust and waste money). Especially if your in an IBD role, its not hard to save up to get the entry level rolex subs or even a very nice 5 digit subs from 1980s-1990s.
Buy a watch because you like it not because you see it as a stepping stone ( does not apply to patek :( $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ )
Seiko makes some of the finest watches in the world. It is a company with astonishing breadth.
Ebel is a great company and the BTR series has a bespoke movement. Nomos as well.
I take it back, they're based on a lemania movement but still highly finished. You still can't get a better made movement for the money, I don't think
