Rolled Off BB IB Analyst Program — Bonus Payout After Exit
I rolled off the program after completing my 2nd year at a BB. I left on my contract last day (June 30th). By May, the hr communicated the bonus payout timeline would be on August. I emailed the hr regarding rolling off bonus. She explicitly confirmed my bonus will follow the same August timeline - payout after I leave the firm.
This August when my peers at the bank got their bonus - I have not received mine. I emailed the same hr, with my personal email address, and she has not responded even to my follow-up.
My understanding is I leave the firm as the analyst contract ends, and I leave on the agreed last day. Meaning I did serve the position for a full year, and I got written notice from HR that I will get my bonus in August.
Anyone in my shoes before? What should i do since my program hr no longer respond to me? (there's a restructure so the group actually does not exist, but the bonus is part of the IB analyst contract - so same hr should be responsible). Thanks.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should consider doing:
Review Your Contract and Documentation: Ensure you have a copy of your employment contract, bonus agreement, and the email from HR confirming your bonus payout timeline. These documents are critical to support your claim.
Escalate Within the Firm: If the HR contact you were dealing with is unresponsive due to restructuring, try reaching out to other HR representatives or the general HR department. Use any available contact information from your time at the firm.
Contact Payroll: Sometimes, payroll departments handle bonus payouts directly. Reach out to them to inquire about the status of your payment.
Leverage Former Colleagues: If you’re still in touch with peers or managers at the firm, ask them for advice or assistance in navigating the internal structure to resolve your issue.
Send a Formal Letter: Draft a professional and formal letter outlining your situation, including the timeline, HR confirmation, and your expectation of the bonus payout. Address it to the HR department or a senior-level contact within the firm.
Legal Consultation: If all internal avenues fail, consider consulting an employment lawyer. They can help you understand your rights and potentially draft a demand letter to the firm.
Stay Persistent but Professional: Follow up regularly, but maintain a professional tone in all communications. Persistence often pays off in these situations.
This situation is not uncommon, and many have faced similar issues. The key is to remain organized, document everything, and escalate appropriately. Good luck!

Bonus is not guaranteed. It’s a discretionary payment.
You left before bonus was paid like a moron.
So now accept the moronic consequences.
Get a job in BB, Director, before shting online. Analyst program in bb follows a 2 year cycle. If you leave by the end of contract due to no extension, u naturally roll off on agreed date. And per contract - bonus should be paid if u roll of on agreed date. Go back to work old bro
Yeah bro they did pay your bonus but it was zero.
I’m not asking from ER. Program is different. Go back to work
Still got a bigger bonus than you :)

If you can’t get their attention and they are truly required to pay your bonus, just get a lawyer and go to them. They’d pay you and move on
However, I would be surprised if they are truly required to pay your bonus after you leave the firm. I’ve also never heard of an analyst bonus being in the contract. Normally it’s worded as “ discretionary performance based bonus” so really is 100% up to the firm if they have to pay you or not
This, bonuses are discretionary and your contract probably says that - did your 2nd year peers who left get bonuses or just the ones still at the firm?
It might be worth a consult with a lawyer, maybe they can send a strongly worded letter for a low fee, but I don't think you really have a legal case unless your contract says your bonus is guaranteed. Even if you stayed until August they could technically give you a $0 bonus if they wanted to...
Good point. But for all analyst rolling off the 2 year program (basically I did not get an extension), I doubt the bank and programs just skip bonuses. It’s a large group
Lesson learned here - bonuses are NEVER guaranteed unless they hit your bank account. I don’t care what HR or your VP or MD says. The contract is designed to benefit the bank and they will never put a clause that will have guaranteed amount of bonus especially for juniors.
Sometimes u don’t have the choice. For all analyst rolls off the program due to no extension - I doubt the bank would skip bonuses for all
If you got rolled off they have 0 reason to pay you. I assume the ones who did get a bonus are the ones who didn’t roll off. It’s common in the industry to pay 0 it’s like a sign the quit if you were still working there.
