IB Summer Recuriting: Western Canada

Hi fellow primates,

Full time recruitment for most banks have passed but soon summer analyst recruitment will kick into full swing. I was hoping to get some words of wisdom on how to best position for a summer internship before it swings into full force.

Though I have a strong GPA, lots of extracurricular and some relevant experiences for investment banking (at boutiques), the school remains a non-target (except by places in Calgary) for recruitment. Goal for this summer is to break into one of the BBs or one of the Big 5s in their ibd.

First of all, I would like to get some words of wisdom from the community on some ways to position strongly for the summer recruitment in Calgary (where most of the banks recognize the school.)

In addition, it would be nice if anyone that has successfully got into one of the banks in Toronto from a non target to share some of your experiences and paths that has allowed you to succeed.

Please share any thoughts or advice that comes to mind. Thanks in advance!

I don't have direct experience in Canadian IB recruiting but my suggestion is just a WSO search for advice regarding non-target recruiting. I don't think the process will be any different for what you are trying to do and I think the advice you get (unless you get the specific anecdotes you want) will be the same general advice given to all prospective SA candidates: network, have relevant experience, know your story etc etc etc.

Won't see a huge amount different at the Canadian bank owned dealers/BB groups. The standard prep will probably be sufficient from my experience, as always, being likable is a big part of the process given the smaller group sizes in Western Canada (most tend to take 1 or 2 SAs max).

There are a couple of energy focused boutiques in HQ'd in Calgary that tend to ask detailed energy focused questions and drive hard on technicals. So if you are interested in applying there, I'd brush up on the industry and valuation techniques used in the resources sector.
