Incoming Duke Freshman (International) - IB Recruiting

Hey,

Incoming Duke Freshman. Trying to understand IB recruiting scene at Duke, especially as an international.

A few quick questions:

  1. Are finance clubs basically required to land IB interviews/network, or can you get there without them?
  2. Any useful classes (econ/accounting/etc.) for IB prep?
  3. How were outcomes this year, particularly for internationals? Haven't see much posted on LinkedIn (including local students)—are people just not posting or was it a tougher cycle?

Appreciate any insights!

To break it down for you:

  1. Are finance clubs required for IB recruiting at Duke?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, joining finance clubs at Duke is highly recommended if you're aiming for IB. The Investment Club (I-Club) is particularly notable as it provides technical experience, networking opportunities, and a strong resume boost. Passing their class certifies you to interview for an analyst position, where you'll gain hands-on experience pitching sector ideas. While it's possible to land IB interviews without club involvement, the clubs act as a major pipeline due to their technical prep and networking advantages. Additionally, Scale and Coin is a significant feeder into I-Club, and many successful candidates overlap between these organizations.

  2. Useful classes for IB prep?
While specific classes aren't detailed in the WSO dataset, courses in economics, accounting, and finance are generally beneficial for IB prep. These subjects build a strong foundation for understanding financial modeling, valuation, and other technical skills required in interviews and internships.

  3. Outcomes for internationals this year?
The WSO dataset doesn't provide specific details on outcomes for international students at Duke this year. However, it’s worth noting that IB recruiting can be competitive, especially for internationals due to visa sponsorship requirements. Networking, leveraging alumni connections, and excelling in finance clubs will be crucial to improving your chances. If outcomes seem less visible on LinkedIn, it could be due to fewer posts or a tougher recruiting cycle, but this isn't explicitly confirmed.

To maximize your chances, focus on joining key clubs, excelling academically, and networking aggressively with Duke alumni in IB. Good luck!

Heard GEM is a great club as well! Super supportive environment, and best president ever. Realistically, the only club you need to join. Besides that, one good course you should take is FMKT 256 in the fall of your sophomore year. All finance people take it. I know many internationals who have placed well in top firms, so don't worry. Feel free to pm if any questions!
