Incoming freshman at UConn looking for advice

Hello, I am new here to this forum but thought I would make a post and see what everyone’s opinions are about UConn as a non target. Looking at alumni the past 2-3 years it seems they’ve done really well, placing across BB (Citi, GS, JPM, Barclays), EBs (Guggenheim, Laz, Rothchilds, Moelis) and some MMs mainly HL.

Genuinely really shocked seeing some of these, making me more excited to start in the fall. But I also question if I should stay for recruiting, should I try to transfer to a better name brand? I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot staying at UConn and not getting looks from banks specifically because they’re a non-target.

Any advice from people who went through similar non target recruiting, if you were to do it again would you try to transfer?

UConn is not a target, but it is also very clearly not some random school with zero path. If people are placing into BBs, EBs, and strong MMs out of there, then the blueprint exists. That matters a lot more than the generic “non target” label.

The bigger question is not “can UConn place,” it is “are you the kind of person who will actually execute hard enough to be one of the kids who places.” At a school like that, outcomes are way more self-selected. You do not get the luxury of banks falling into your lap just because OCR is strong and half your class is doing the same thing.

I’m ngl I haven’t looked but I’m willing to bet a majority of those bankers went and got an MBA or lateraled from accounting etc; it’s highly unlikely they got offers at said places via summer analyst route and if they did it’s one in a thousand. I’d focus on getting good grades and transferring to a better school

I went to UConn and got multiple SA offers at banks/HFs/PE etc. I am at a large SM HF now.

I did it through hard work, cold emailing, and networking.

You can get any role from UConn if you just put enough effort in. Yes it’s way harder than if you went to Harvard, but it’s a decent enough school where nothing is off the table.

It’s on you to execute and get to where you want to go, but don’t be discouraged by your school or think that will be the limiting factor.

I’ll send you my info on IM and we can chat in 6-12 months after you’ve started school

I’d encourage you to just enjoy your senior year and last summer before college. You can start all the recruiting stuff 6 months from now and still be ahead of the game

Look it’s a respectable state school. It’s a non target, but there’s a wide range of non targets. That’s what people don’t seem to understand, there’s a big difference between a non selective directional state school with an average 900 SAT and UCONN. My advice is do well, network and if you can transfer to a target or strong semi target consider it.
