Incoming SA, good idea to reach out to alum at the firm and/or continue to network?

Incoming S&T SA at a BB in NYC, the bank has not told us very much about their plans. Group placement for the rotational program was mentioned to us in an early March email, but we have not gotten any communication about this since. Would it be a good idea to do either of the following given full-timers have a lot on their plates right now due to the pandemic:

1) Reach out to alum to ask if they know what's going on with the intern program (am friendly with them but not particularly close, haven't spoken to them since last year)
2) Reach out to desks for networking

My concerns are that I'm not even sure whether there will even be desk placement due to the likely virtual format, and that it may look impolite to be networking or asking about the intern program during a difficult time for many. What would be the best course of action in this scenario? Thanks WSO.
