International intern in Europe, Tips?

Background: I am international student in France, going into my undergrad Sophomore year at a French target school. I will be beginning the search for 2025 internships as I have a 6 month internship slot beginning March. At the moment, I'm doing a corporate finance internship at a chartered accountants firm in my home country in South Asia.

Experience: I have previous experience in France as a 6-month market research analyst for a major player in the HVAC industry and my current 3-month corporate finance internship in Asia.

As an international student, with B1/B2 level in French (along with the occasional google translate), what are some key Do's or Don'ts that I should keep in mind? I'd ideally look to join a boutique, BB, or for that matter any decently known firm in the industry so that I can collect the infinity stones of finance internships before the time for Off-Cycle comes about. My primary aim would be to land an opportunity in France (cheaper relocation as I'm already here) but I am open to any European countries (all hail the Schengen Visa) or even London.

Any advice/tips/personal experience will be greatly appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key Do's and Don'ts for an international intern in Europe:

Do's:

  1. Show Initiative:

    • Always be proactive. Even if it feels like you're being a kiss-ass, showing initiative is crucial. Ask analysts if they need help, even if you're shy.
  2. Be Honest:

    • Make a conscious effort to be 100% honest in the office. Integrity is highly valued.
  3. Proofread:

    • Always proofread your emails and documents before sending them. Errors can be detrimental to your professional image.
  4. Ask Questions:

    • Thoroughly research before asking questions, but never be afraid to ask if you genuinely need help.
  5. Respect:

    • Maintain respect in all communications. Never talk badly about colleagues in emails or any other form of communication.
  6. Assimilate with Office Norms:

    • Try to blend in with the office culture. Go out for lunch with your team and participate in team activities.
  7. Network:

    • Find someone similar to you and get to know them outside of work. Building a network is essential.
  8. Stay Humble:

    • Always act humble. Cockiness can lead to negative perceptions and might make colleagues want to knock you down a peg.

Don'ts:

  1. Don't Get Too Comfortable Too Quickly:

    • Avoid getting too familiar with colleagues too soon. For example, making jokes about sensitive topics can backfire.
  2. Don't Be Late:

    • Punctuality is crucial. Being late can undermine confidence in your ability to meet deadlines.
  3. Don't Overeat During Lunch:

    • Avoid overeating as it can lead to a food coma, affecting your productivity.
  4. Don't Recreate the Wheel:

    • If you don't understand how to complete a task, don't try to reinvent the process. Seek guidance instead.
  5. Don't Talk Badly About Colleagues:

    • Avoid negative talk about colleagues, especially in emails. It can have severe repercussions on your career.

Additional Tips:

  • Language Skills:

    • Since you have B1/B2 level in French, continue improving your language skills. This will help you integrate better and reduce reliance on tools like Google Translate.
  • Cultural Adaptation:

    • Be aware of cultural differences and adapt accordingly. Each European country has its own work culture and etiquette.
  • Leverage Your Experience:

    • Highlight your diverse experience in both market research and corporate finance during your applications. This can set you apart from other candidates.
  • Target Firms:

    • Focus on boutique firms, BBs, or well-known firms in the industry. Tailor your applications to highlight how your background and skills align with their needs.

By following these tips, you can enhance your chances of securing a valuable internship in Europe. Good luck with your search!
