Internship Cold Email Help

Hi all,

I am hoping to get some experience during the fall/spring semester in college, and it seems from school peers that interning at local, smaller shops ~10 people would be a great place to start.

Was wondering if anyone has any insight into how these opportunities come about—listed some general questions below.

1: What position title do people typically reach out to? (MD?) 2: Should you flat out ask for internship in cold email? Or similar situation to referrals with coffee chats. 3: Are these typically paid positions or unpaid? (Assume large variability here) 4: What are some resources to filter out and find these smaller firms?

Thanks for any responses!

To maximize your chances of landing an internship at smaller firms, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Who to Reach Out To?

  • Target MDs, VPs, or senior professionals at smaller firms. These individuals often have the authority to make decisions about hiring interns. Avoid generic "contact us" emails as they are less likely to yield results.

2. Should You Directly Ask for an Internship?

  • Yes, you can directly ask for an internship in your cold email. Keep it concise and professional. For example:
    • Introduce yourself (name, university, major).
    • State your interest in their firm and why you’re reaching out.
    • Highlight relevant skills or experiences briefly.
    • Politely inquire about internship opportunities and attach your resume.
  • Avoid lengthy emails or trying to build rapport in the email itself. Save that for follow-up conversations or interviews.

3. Are These Positions Paid or Unpaid?

  • Smaller firms often offer unpaid internships, especially if they are boutique shops. However, some may provide stipends or hourly pay. Be prepared for variability and focus on the experience and networking opportunities.

4. How to Find These Smaller Firms?

  • Use the following resources to identify and filter smaller firms:
    • LinkedIn: Search for boutique firms in your area and connect with professionals.
    • University Alumni Networks: Reach out to alumni working in smaller firms.
    • Online Directories: Websites like Trillium Partners (https://www.trilliumpartners.co.uk/careers/) or Sainoo (https://www.sainoo.com/jobs) often list opportunities.
    • Cold Emailing: Compile a list of firms through Google searches and industry-specific directories, then reach out directly.

Additional Tips:

  • Persistence is key. Send emails to 50-60 firms if needed.
  • Tailor each email to the firm and individual you’re contacting.
  • Follow up if you don’t hear back within a week or two.

By targeting the right people, being direct in your approach, and leveraging the right resources, you’ll increase your chances of securing an internship. Good luck!
