Internship Needed
Hey guys,
This may be a dumb question but I'm asking it anyway. Trying to find smaller banks to intern at this summer so I can leverage the experience for an internship at a bigger bank for junior. The question I have is, how do I find these banks?
Thanks,
NK
Hi Noah, good luck with your Citi interview. I know their retail branch is considered a regional bank (a little smaller compared to WF and JP), but I'm sure the MD can help you leverage once he texts you back. Hope this helps :)
Thanks. Sometimes they don't seem to pick up on that the fact that I am trying to have them help me get an internship at their bank, how do I say that without being too forward or blunt?
Search on google, linkedin, glassdoor, or even these forums. You can also talk to anybody you may know who is already working in the industry - most people at larger firms will know of at least a few very small boutiques without a formal recruiting process for summer interns.
Thanks guys. I found this list for banks in new york, but would there be any closer to where I live, or not really? I live in CT.

Just curious, where in CT? I live there as well.
Stamford
Wow, that's a comprehensive list. Even my small specialty shop is on there...
wow which one do you work for?
so I guess it's safe to say that all the firms I could reach out to are on that list, correct?
Nope.
Use Keyword searches, business lookups, financial databases you have access to (screen for M&A activity at a low market cap, then look at the advisor names), google maps, ACG membership/meetings, ask professors, and so on.
thanks man appreciate the info
what is the ACG? I'm a noob lol.
Not to be mean or anything, take this in a sincere way please. If you live in Stamford, you're near many smaller boutique banks and PE shops just in that city. Not to mention you have Greenwich, Westport, and other surrounding towns with many opportunities. You also can't just limit yourself to that area. You're not too far of a train ride to NYC and can contact people there. My main point is if you can't think on your own to find ways to contact firms/find them, you may not be ready for an internship in IB where higher and creative thinking is a must.
OP is only a sophomore in college, give them a break. If anything OP is ahead of the game for thinking this far ahead. Great idea to find a small firm to intern at after sophomore year since the large banks generally only hire juniors. It is very understandable to not know where to start the search at that age, given their lack of experience.
yeah I am a far ahead thinker for the most part. I searched for small AM shops in my area in and in ny, but then i realized that might not be a good idea because I don't want to do buy side. That's why I'm doing sell side now, and I find those places harder to find, which I why I ask these seemingly noob questions lol. Also I think that when I start an internship this summer, I will really grow in the area of thinking for myself. No offense taken jv i totally see your point.
You mention wanting to do sell side. Do you not see the merit of having buy side experience? What is the reserve in doing it,and how could it hurt your chances? Banks want to see experience related to what they do, not necessarily IB work specific. Besides if there’s more PE shops around you, why not take advantage of that? Many people in that area are ex-bankers and have connections to set up face-to-face meetings or put in a good word for you.
true
I feel for you because as I said, I’m in CT and only last summer realized I wanted to go into IB or PE. I graduate this Fall so you’re ahead, yes, but if you’re ahead so are a lot of people. I go to a non-target and managed to get a boutique IB internship for this current spring semester and a small PE firm internship for the summer. What I’m trying to say is best of luck, if you need help or advice just ask. Not saying I’m way ahead of you at all, but I could try to help you a bit where I can.
yes I appreciate any advice that you might be able to give.
