Internship Options for 2019 Summer to land FT IB role in the Fall

To start off, I am a junior finance major at a semi-target with a 3.8. I am trying to position myself to land a FT IB in the fall of 2019 for when I graduate in spring 2020. I am not necessarily focused on getting a BB IB offer as I am more than happy with a boutique bank offer but I am not sure what would position me better for that.

I have two options for my internship this summer:

  • A valuation firm in healthcare that is well paid
    OR
  • A small PE firm with maybe 5 employees but it would be an unpaid internship

My worry with the valuation firm is while it looks good, I just don't want it to pigeon hole me and keep me from receiving an offer in something other than healthcare but I think the valuation experience would be great. On the other hand, from what I have heard though PE internships look great I just am worried about not getting paid all summer as I was hoping to get at least make a few thousand this summer to pay for school in the fall.

What should I do to position myself with the best chance for a FT offer in Fall 2019?
