Internships on Exchange in Foreign Speaking
So going on exchange next year (Jan-July), to pretty much the only target school in Italy (which is a bit of an advantage), speak the language decent (B2, could be an issue), wondering if its worth trying to get an internship while on exchange or just enjoy the semester (I realise that fluency is probably required just wondering about BB's, EBs probably speaking in English)? Considering they are all off cycle and would be done throughout the semester is it worth trying? Anyone got advice?
If you're heading to the only target school in Italy, you're already in a strong position. Here's what you need to consider:
Language Barrier: While B2 proficiency is decent, fluency is often a requirement for internships in Italy, especially in IB roles. As noted in WSO threads, not speaking the local language at a professional level can be a non-starter for many roles, particularly in French or Italian IB. However, some BBs and EBs may operate in English, so it's worth targeting those.
Off-Cycle Internships: Off-cycle internships are common in Europe, including Italy. These internships often align with academic semesters and can be a great way to gain experience. In Paris, for example, a standard path includes 6 months off-cycle at BB/EB and 6 months at MM or PE. While this is specific to Paris, it highlights the importance of internships in European IB.
Networking: Being at a target school in Italy gives you access to alumni and networking opportunities. Use this to your advantage to explore internship possibilities, even if fluency might be a hurdle.
Balancing Enjoyment and Career Goals: If your goal is to break into IB, securing an internship during your exchange could set you apart. However, if you feel the language barrier might limit your options or the experience, you could focus on networking and enjoying the semester while preparing for future opportunities.
English-Speaking Opportunities: Some BBs and EBs in Italy might operate in English, but these roles are limited. Research specific firms and their language requirements before applying.
In summary, if you can find an English-speaking role or improve your language skills to a professional level, pursuing an internship is worth it. Otherwise, focus on networking and enjoying your exchange while preparing for future opportunities.
