Interviewer chewing gum during interview? (open mouth)
Had a super-day for a FT role with a BB this week. And during one of the interviews, an MD comes in chewing gum with his mouth open, talks on the phone prior to take the interview. And then continues to chew gum (with open mouth) and ask the most basic questions "How does our bank make money?" throughout the interview.
How normal is this?
And an Asso was beside him, who was normal and asking proper IB questions here and there and just pausing/ceasing to exist while the MD does his shit.
is this in the states? and how did you swing it, i know you can't share too much but still interested to know being griding for FT without much luck
.
I'm in the same boat, and have had a few calls with MDs and heads, and two of them sent my resume to the lateral refuting head as well. I wonder if that's the same one, but he replied differently. EB doesn't mind sponsoring, and they have lawyers to help figure that out, so I'll reach out when I see an open position, except that EB hasn't been doing recruiting for a while, and arelooking for an experienced analyst just luck I guess at this point
What do you want to hear? Sure chewing gum with open mouth is annoying but does it change anything about your approach or interest in the role? Maybe it does, but that is your business.
Also, if you're taking offense to an MD not giving reverence to a possible analyst hire, wait until you're actually working for one.
It's not about requiring reverence, it's about how you carry yourself and represent the office/firm especially in an interview - whether in front of juniors or seniors.
I have been in interviews / conferences / fundraisers / calls and talked to many seniors - MDs/global heads/Presidents. No one I have met yet has done sth similar.
Okay, fine but, right or wrong, you think a MD is going to approach a conversation with a possible analyst hire the same way they would approach a pitch or conversation with a client?
If you have a wealth of opportunities in this challenging market and you want to withdraw from a process because of a perceived slight, then do it. I would think nothing of this interaction personally.
You seem to have less disdain for the associate and that is far more relevant from a day-to-day work perspective, nevermind that most MDs will defer to the opinion of their junior team on junior hires anyway.
dude i promise you you are being a sensitive little pot flower. if you took this much offense to someone chewing gum in your interview, i can't imagine how much of a stink you are going to try to make if you actually hit the desk either in IB or any other job. someone chewing gum in front of you will be the least of your worries as an analyst and if this bothers you so much i sincerely recommend you reconsider trying to break into IB. and shut up with the how you carry yourself nonsense mate. you are not even an analyst yet and he chewed gum in front of you either because you mean nothing to him (rightfully so since you haven't earned anything yet) or he is a brosky and wanted to be relaxed in front of you.
I never said I was offended. It felt weird to answer his questions with the sound and the visual.
You could have just answered the last part without getting triggered.
And I am not a privileged target kid getting out of my undergrad. I am 26, grad student, have lived in 3 countries, raised in one during a war, and worked other jobs. And I was surprised because this was the first time sth like this happened in an interview. Never seen any other MD or global head - IB or not - chew gum in a coffee chat and def not in an interview. And wanted to know if it was normal.
When people usually accuse others of being triggered, it means they themselves are. Someone chewing gum triggered you enough for you to come to these forums and post this thread and then argue with others when they tell you that you are being a tulip.
You keep asking people if it was normal or not. Why does that even matter bro? The gum chewing is such an insignificant event that it is hilarious that you can't get over it. either you thought you deserved more "respect" (you didn't) or you are trying to use this as an excuse on why you butchered your interview (it wasn't). Either way, toughen up and move on. This kind of mentality is going to break you on the desk as you will be "disrespected" way more than someone chewing gum in front of you. lol
Hope you heal soon, brother.
and i hope no one else chews gum in front of you so no one else has to suffer through your whining. lmao
How you do anything is how you do everything. I wouldn't want to work for someone who isn't self aware enough to have some basic manners when interacting with others. Rain maker or not (probably not in this case), sounds like a dumbass.
Thank you! Finally a sensible comment. Even global heads and Presidents are such respectful towards juniors. Looks like people have been totally brainwashed to accept anything.
And yeah he isn’t a rainmaker. All the money-making MDs in the group were recently poached.
I just felt weird with the consistent yaingch yaingch sound and the white gum rolling around, lol.
Might get some MS for this, but I wouldn’t judge someone for chewing gum. IMO, some mint gum is a polite way to get rid of coffee breath if you interact in close physical proximity with other people in the office.
Also, the MD might just be mewing haha.
Your answer at least make sense. Thanks. Why would anyone MS.
People above just getting triggered and saying I am making excuses for my interview and I don't deserve respect when all I asked was how normal is this. Idgaf. People so used to being treated like shit that they are butthurt when someone questions something.
You think Ken Moelis and Paul Taubman chewed gum open-mouthed while interviewing candidates in their careers? lol.
brother, i sincerely hope santa gets you some gift cards for therapy sessions. multiple ppl have told u it doesnt matter yet you keep feeling the need to talk about it. the world doesn't revolve around you cupcake. i think we are more disturbed at how unhinged you are versus being butthurt.
the fact that you embarrassingly name drop ken moelis and paul taubman shows how out of depth you are. u cry so much about how gum chewing is bad manners yet you cite these two old school bankers lmao...if you ever get a chance to work with them, im sure that experience will require you to write a series of novels longer than harry potter given how weak minded you are haha.
and by the way, you are a coward as well. you say everyone is triggered and used to being treated like shit, yet you didnt say anything to the gum chewer right? instead you came crying to the internet saying the MD is not even a rain maker. so not only are you a whiny little dandelion, you are also a hypocrite coward haha.
I knew an Army General who would constantly smoke cigars outside and driving his truck. In buildings where smoking was prohibited, he still had a cigar in his mouth and he would just suck on it and chew it in meetings, meetings with everyone. It was kind of hilarious. His daughter Nancy (Mace) is in politics now.
I'm glad you didn't use ChatGPT for this one.
Yeah, army generals be hardened sometimes. Most disciplined people all their lives but if there is one thing they completely do not agree with, they will revolt every chance they get. My family is military as far back as I know, haha.
I'm with OP on this one. That would dive me absolutely crazy -- I can't stand open-mouth chewers..
Thank you. The yaingch yaingch sound with the white gum rolling around his mouth made me insane lol.
