Invest in modeling course prior to starting?
Is it worth spending the $400-$500 on a modeling course if you are starting in a specialty group (O&G/FIG) at a BB this summer? I know you’ll learn on the job but could this help get better assignments early on or just be a waste of time?
It might be useful, however, I'd first reach out to anyone on your team that you're familiar with and ask for any material that they can send you. I'm sure one of them as an O&G/FIG modeling course somewhere. You'll able to save a couple hundred bucks.
Unfortunately, I didn't intern in the group so less a senior banker I know, I'm not too familiar with anyone. I have a few analysts I've talked to but not a ton, do you think asking them is a bad idea since I'm not too close with them
No, I don't think it's a bad idea at all. In fact, you should probably email a couple analysts and just introduce yourself, say you're eager to "hit the ground running," and ask if they could send you any material. Maybe ask for the material after both of you have talked a little. I'm sure they're busy, but they'll probably like that you're trying to learn material (and niche material) before you hit the desk.
