Is it okay to follow up with an VP after not progressing in a previous failed interview?

A few months ago, I cold-emailed an VP when his team was hiring at a BB. We didn’t really speak, but after a few back-and-forth emails, he forwarded my resume to an analyst, and I got a first-round interview. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the second round and got ghosted

Now, I see his team is hiring again. Would it be acceptable to reach out to him, or did I burn that bridge? I feel a bit awkward emailing him again since he already gave me a shot, and I blew it.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's definitely acceptable to follow up with the VP. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Persistence is Key: Following up is crucial. As mentioned in the WSO threads, hustle and follow-up are essential. It's only desperate or annoying if your approach is wrong.
  • Approach: Make sure your follow-up email is well-written and thoughtful. Acknowledge your previous interaction and express your continued interest in the team and the position.
  • Timing: Wait a reasonable amount of time before following up. A week is often suggested, but since a few months have passed, now is a good time to reach out again.
  • Confidence: Show confidence in your email. As highlighted in the WSO content, taking the initiative and having confidence is important. Don't let past failures deter you from trying again.

Here's a suggested approach for your email:

  1. Acknowledge Past Interaction: Mention your previous correspondence and thank him for the opportunity he provided last time.
  2. Express Continued Interest: Clearly state your interest in the new opening and why you believe you are a good fit.
  3. Highlight Improvements: Briefly mention any new skills or experiences you have gained since your last interview that make you a stronger candidate.
  4. Request Consideration: Politely ask if he could consider your application again or forward your resume to the relevant person.

Remember, persistence and a well-crafted follow-up can make a significant difference. Good luck!
