Is It Worse

The conversation lately has been on the stances taken by banks and how quality of life is significantly worse than we all expected. However, when I talk to associates and above the refrain I hear is similar to what senior management most places has said: suck it up, we all did it (though I was never actually an analyst). The value that an analyst adds is so little that you just don't matter. Its worse for seniors. You signed up for this. My son is a marine. My daughter was a girl-scout.

Thus my question are things actually worse or is the analyst class of "2020" just trying to capitalizing on an opportunity. A few thoughts of mine below. I think its currently worse for analysts

  • Banking is supposed to be an all consuming job, to an extent everyone did sign up for this, but:
  • Nobody has any idea how hard you work
  • Analysts have largely been objectified by senior management as their are very little interactions and MDs just know you are someone that work can be funneled to and it can be done. Thus seniors are even further out of touch than they usually are
  • You can't turn off, there is no work / life differentiation - its just work, 168 hours a week
  • Mentorship is lacking
  • There is no culture
