JPM Group Placements: Looking for Advice on what to Prioritize

Interested in fundamental L/S Equities/Credit longer term. Might sound weird but I've just kept in contact with people on those specific parts of buyside and I think I'd be happy to end up on either side.

Not too sure what to target for group placements , but I'll lay out what I'm interested in and why. The broad advice I've received is to target the M&A group because of exit opportunities, but I'm wondering how much it matters and what I should prioritize the most. On a description basis and having some interest in distressed debt/private credit, Lev Fin sounds the most interesting to me with the widest variance of work and slight dip into RX work/special sits. However, I'd be interested to know if that limits any opportunities, or if JPM is JPM and I could be at most groups in New York and end up where I want to be.

Additionally, given the competitiveness of M&A, I'm wondering if I targeted Lev Fin if the chance I get my first choice would be drastically higher than if I chose M&A to target, and if that's something to take into consideration as well. What's the point of targeting M&A if there was a high chance I end up in a group I'm not particularly interested in?

Lastly, in terms of learning opportunities, is there a stark contrast between joining M&A, Lev Fin, or other industry/product groups that I end up enjoying conversations with? Say I get along with people on the C&R team or mid-cap team the most, would that change my range of outcomes by much?

Didn't apply, wasn't interested until way later

Also holy ego dude, literally a post asking for advice and you’re hating for no reason. You’re why people think people in finance are douchey/insufferable. So what if I want to make a well informed decision? Sure it’s not that deep but nothing wrong with asking.
