I wouldn't consider them a top group in SF, but still a good one. Just wrapped up the summer associate recruiting process for most of the SF banks so have a pretty good lay of the land.

In terms of deal flow, JPM does well. They mainly get the scraps of what GS/MS/Q pass on for IPOs (Lyft, for example) and do well in M&A (SAP/Qualtrics, Broadcom/CA, IBM/Red Hat). M&A is completely separate from tech coverage, and it seems M&A is much more heavily sought after. I haven't heard good experiences from those I know working in coverage. They also have a separate healthcare group, but I did not interact with them.

Recruiting with them is absolute shit, however. Everyone from my MBA program and from the other programs I spoke with unanimously agree that this firm does not have it together. The bankers are horrible at responding and the process was haphazard and poorly communicated. Both of the individuals from my school who interned there last summer are not returning FT (by choice).

All in all, it's one of the better firms in SF, but I'd obviously go for GS/MS/Q if you can. I know of a few people who chose Evercore Menlo over JPM SF as well. Seems to be the general perception from others I've spoken to. I'd make the same choice personally. I was not impressed with those I met during the process but there is still plenty of legacy talent/name recognition at the firm.
