Just got into a T15 MBA, targeting Boston IB, is there any difference in recruiting compared to NYC recruitment? Any insight is much appreciated!

Hey guys, I’m pretty much dead set on Boston because it’s my favorite city and want to start a family here. I’m looking for IB internships next year and want to get a head start in prep. Looking for folks that work in Boston IB to give some insights in recruiting. Is it different from NYC? How should I approach it to maximize my chance? Thank you to yall kind folks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about targeting Boston IB versus NYC:

  1. Recruiting Differences:

    • Smaller Market: Boston's IB market is significantly smaller than NYC's. While NYC is the global hub for investment banking, Boston is more niche, with a focus on industries like healthcare, biotech, and asset management. This means fewer firms and fewer spots, so competition can be tighter.
    • Networking is Key: In Boston, networking plays an even more critical role. Since the market is smaller, building relationships with bankers in the area is essential. Attend local events, reach out to alumni, and schedule coffee chats to make yourself known.
    • Group-Specific Recruiting: Similar to NYC, many banks in Boston recruit for specific groups. Research which banks have a strong presence in Boston and align your interests with their focus areas.
  2. Approach to Maximize Your Chances:

    • Target the Right Firms: Focus on firms with a strong Boston presence, such as Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and boutique firms like William Blair or Harris Williams. Also, consider firms with healthcare or biotech expertise.
    • Leverage Your MBA Network: Use your T15 MBA network to connect with alumni working in Boston IB. Alumni are often more willing to help, especially if they share a connection to your school.
    • Tailor Your Story: Highlight your passion for Boston and your long-term commitment to the city. Firms in smaller markets value candidates who are genuinely interested in staying local.
    • Prepare for Technicals and Behaviorals: While Boston recruiting may feel more personal, the technical and behavioral expectations are just as rigorous as NYC. Use resources like WSO’s IB Prep Pack to ensure you’re ready.
  3. Additional Tips:

    • Start Early: Boston recruiting can be less structured than NYC, so starting early and being proactive is crucial.
    • Focus on Fit: Cultural fit is often emphasized more in smaller markets. Demonstrate that you align with the firm’s values and team dynamics.
    • Be Persistent: With fewer opportunities, persistence is key. Stay in touch with your network and follow up regularly.

By focusing on networking, targeting the right firms, and preparing thoroughly, you can position yourself strongly for Boston IB recruiting. Good luck!

Is your MBA in boston or any background in bos? I recruited for some bos IB as an undergrad as well as the pe programs there and I was from nyc, they all asked me what my motivation was for moving there. maybe your exp is diff if you're coming from a smaller city.

Thanks for the response! My MBA will either be Cornell or Duke so it won’t be in Boston. But I’m only targeting Boston because I want to live there long term. Ah I see! How did you find the people to reach out to in Boston?

Recruited for Boston as an MBA. its tough because you are competing against MIT/HBS/Tuck guys that can coffee chat in person all fall. Similar to Houston, big question is Why Boston, since they dont want it to be a backup for NYC. A Boston IB ranking post would be nice, but Moelis TMT, Jefferies Autoparts, Lazard, Gugg have teams there

Thanks for the response! How did you go about finding people to reach out to for coffee chats? Just LinkedIn?
