Kid fucked up RX networking already

Close friend of mine asked me to chat a rising sophomore as he was interested in RX. Chat was going decent and kid was sharp but towards the end it seemed like he was really feeling himself.

As I end the chat he does one of those flight reacts tongue out shakes (I think he thought I left?). What’s up with students these days??

It sounds like the student might have let their guard down a bit too much at the end of the conversation, which can definitely leave a less-than-professional impression. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how to handle situations like this:

  1. Focus on the Positives: If the student was sharp and engaged during the majority of the conversation, that’s a good sign. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they’re young and inexperienced.

  2. Provide Constructive Feedback: If you feel comfortable, let your close friend know about the incident in a constructive way. They can pass along the feedback to the student, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professionalism throughout the entire interaction.

  3. Students Need to Learn: Many students don’t realize how much every interaction matters, especially in a field like RX where reputation and relationships are everything. This could be a valuable learning moment for them.

  4. Don’t Let It Overshadow the Whole Chat: If the student showed genuine interest and potential, it might be worth giving them the benefit of the doubt. A single misstep doesn’t necessarily define their character or future potential.

Students these days might be more casual in their approach, but it’s up to mentors and professionals to guide them on how to navigate these situations better. If they’re sharp, they’ll take the feedback and grow from it.

Funniest

Clearly a talent of this caliber shouldn’t be wasted in RX investment banking, or—god forbid—M&A or coverage. This genius, nay, finance god of a man should immediately be given a junior year SA role at Apollo PE, a role reserved only for the greatest geniuses in all of the land, so coveted that even Albert Einstein was unable to land a role. Clearly we are not even worthy of being graced by the presence of this sophomore over video conference. I only hope that, if perhaps he may find some magnanimity in the his superior intellect, he helps out those of us with our feeble minds by creating a tier list to rank all the firms, so that his infinite wisdom in the field of finance, the most intellectually challenging of all fields, may benefit us all.

Every year the networking gets worse and worse. I think the term "brainrot" may actually be what's happening to these kids.

what brainrot kid is gonna be networking this early for ib... theyre busy watching speed clips with subway surfers in the bottom half of their screen

Just watched a YouTube video on 'flight reacts tongue out shakes'

Will be trying it today after I shadow staff one of our interns.

Oh buddy, I'm teaching my analyst about what "maxxing" and "mogging" mean - the world of traditional finance is changing, for the better

Funniest part is when they try to use it, we were disagreeing about how to use an excel function (he ended up being right...) and he goes "I just maxxed you", like no bruh u mogged the hell outta me tho

hopping on calls in june means he isnt that bright so not that much of a surprise. has to be an iu kelly bot who golfs at public courses and is still riding the high on getting into a top club thinking he has a shot at rx

drop him. these are the types of individuals that get internships over other high caliber individuals from non target schools (not saying this because i didnt get an offer cuz i got an offer from hella banks and PE shops so I don't really care). at the end of the day I think it was stupid for him to do that, I know a kid back from my school who also does similar like behavior and still landed an offer at two major banks which I still don't think he deserved because he does not take things seriously.

Networking events should be fully on merit basis in terms of GPA, # of internships & quality of those internships (if theres 100 interns at the firm at the same time, no merit there), balanced out between target and non target schools, and people who seem serious by doing pre-interview screenings for in person networking events. the rest just go down the drain and do consulting.

dont recruit this kid, he's just an example of someone who has a huge ego (still thinks college is his kingdom like high school) and probably split screens his interviews and reads off chatgpt or the BIWS guide when answering basic technicals (prolly like that one wharton girl I met during an interview process at a solid shop who got the role but couldn't answer "why debt is cheaper than equity?")
